Remembering Vicha Ratanapakdee
84 years old. A grandfather. A peaceful neighbor. A life that mattered.

Vicha was out on his daily walk, something he loved, when he was violently attacked in San Francisco in 2021. What happened to him shook our community and became one of the moments that helped spark the Stop Asian Hate movement, a call to protect our elders and stand against violence targeting Asian Americans.

What happened in the case.
The man charged in the attack, Antoine Watson, was acquitted of murder and elder abuse by a jury. However, he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and assault in connection with Vicha’s death. Watson will be sentenced later this month.

This outcome shows how complicated and unjust the legal system can feel, especially for families and communities already grieving.

Why it matters.
Vicha’s death was not just the tragic loss of one life. It became a symbol of how vulnerable our elders can be and how urgently we need safety, awareness, and change.

We honor Vicha by remembering who he was, not just how he died, and by continuing to stand up for justice, dignity, and the safety of Asian elders everywhere. by @ricefeed

The company was founded by husband-and-wife duo Jin Sook and Do Won “Don” Chang after they emigrated from South Korea to Los Angeles in 1981. The pair opened their first store, then called Fashion 21, in 1984 and pulled in $700,000 worth of sales in the first year.

The retailer thrived through the early 2000s, eventually peaking in 2015 when its founders were worth a record high of $5.9 billion combined, Forbes reported. Today, Forbes estimates that the cofounders are no longer billionaires.

Forever 21 announced its bankruptcy filing in a letter to shoppers in September, writing: “Once we complete a reorganization, Forever 21 will be a stronger, more viable company that is better positioned to prosper for years to come. We look forward to continuing to provide you with the great service and curated assortment of merchandise that you expect from us.”

Yet as the 2010s wore on, the brand began to be eclipsed by online rivals, including ultra-cheap fast-fashion retailers like Shein and Temu that ship garments to U.S. shoppers from overseas, especially China. That embrace of e-commerce has proved challenging for Forever 21, which long relied on foot traffic at physical locations.

“Forever 21 was the brand that the former generation used,” said Roger Beahm, a marketing professor and director of the Retail Learning Labs at Wake Forest University, told the Los Angeles Times. “Today’s shoppers want their own brand, they want their own identity.” by @ricefeed

Former Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte was arrested Tuesday in Manila by police acting on an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant citing crimes against humanity tied to his deadly war on drugs.

The 79-year-old faces a charge of “the crime against humanity of murder”, according to the ICC, for a crackdown in which rights groups estimate tens of thousands of mostly poor men were killed by officers and vigilantes, often without proof they were linked to drugs.

“Early in the morning, Interpol Manila received the official copy of the warrant of the arrest from the ICC,” the presidential palace said in a statement.

The Philippines quit the ICC in 2019 on Duterte’s instructions, but the tribunal maintained it had jurisdiction over killings before the pullout, as well as killings in the southern city of Davao when Duterte was mayor there, years before he became president.

Charges have been filed locally in a handful of cases related to drug operations that led to deaths, only nine police have been convicted for slaying alleged drug suspects.

A self-professed killer, Duterte told officers to fatally shoot narcotics suspects if their lives were at risk and insisted the crackdown saved families and prevented the Philippines from turning into a “narco-politics state”.

At the opening of a Philippine Senate probe into the drug war in October, Duterte said he offered “no apologies, no excuses” for his actions.

“I did what I had to do, and whether or not you believe it or not, I did it for my country,” he said. by @ricefeed

Scientists at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology), led by Professor Kwang-Hyun Cho, have pioneered a revolutionary cancer treatment that reprograms colon cancer cells to behave like healthy cells instead of destroying them. This cutting-edge gene therapy utilizes AI-powered genetic modeling to target molecular switches, reversing cancer at the genetic level. Unlike traditional chemotherapy and radiation, which cause severe side effects by killing both cancerous and healthy cells, this next-generation cancer treatment offers a highly targeted, non-invasive solution with minimal damage to surrounding tissues.

Published in Advanced Science, this breakthrough represents a paradigm shift in oncology, paving the way for precision medicine and personalized cancer therapies. By reprogramming cancer cells rather than eliminating them, this approach could boost cancer survival rates and reduce dependency on toxic cancer substances. Experts believe this biotech innovation could extend to treating other cancers, offering renewed hope for millions worldwide. With advancements in AI-driven substance discovery, genetic engineering, and health tech, this discovery marks a turning point in cancer research, bringing us closer to a cure for cancer with fewer side effects and improved patient outcomes. by @ricefeed

BREAKING: The Supreme Court has upheld a law that will ban TikTok within 48 hours.

“There is no doubt that, for more than 170 million Americans, TikTok offers a distinctive and expansive outlet for expression, means of engagement, and source of community,” the ruling states, “But Congress has determined that divestiture is necessary to address its well-supported national security concerns regarding TikTok’s data collection practices and relationship with a foreign adversary.”

It may not be a public holiday in Japan, but Christmas there is big business.

Quirky seasonal customs take place in people’s homes across the country, while city squares host elaborate Christmas displays.

So, how does Japan actually celebrate Christmas?

And why in such a secular, non-Western country has it become a popular holiday?

Fried chicken was marketed by KFC Japan as the perfect Christmas food in the 1970s — and it stuck.

Urban legend, perpetuated by KFC, held that Westerners unable to source turkey in Japan instead settled for Kentucky Fried Chicken.

KFC Japan estimates that 3 to 4 million families eat its chicken for Christmas each year.

Tokyo: In a bid to arrest the declining birth rate, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has announced plans to implement a four-day workweek for its employees as it aims to combat Japan’s record-low fertility rates.

This move comes as Japan grapples with an ageing population. Although Japan’s overall population has been shrinking, the proportion of people aged 65 and above has risen to 29.3%, the highest of any country, according to the Statistics Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

The new policy gives employees the option to take three days off each week, while parents of elementary school children can choose to shorten their working hours with a minor salary reduction. The initiative was unveiled by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike.

“Flexibility in work styles is crucial,” Koike said.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike announced that the metropolitan government’s employees will be able to take three days off every week beginning in April.

“With flexibility, we will review work styles to ensure that no one has to give up their career due to life events like childbirth or child care,” she said at the fourth regular session of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly.

Amid Japan’s record-low fertility rate, the new policy seeks to encourage couples to have children. According to the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare, despite the government’s heightened efforts to promote family growth, the fertility rate dropped to just 1.2 children per woman last year—well below the 2.1 required for a stable population.

Koike also introduced a new policy allowing parents of primary school-aged children to trade a portion of their salary for the option to leave work early.

“In these difficult times for the country, Tokyo must take the initiative to safeguard and improve the lives, livelihoods, and economy of our people,” she added. by @ricefeed

Filipino-Americans have been flocking to stores after rumors that the United States will be banning the import of several beloved condiments.

Reports from around the internet are claiming that fans of products like Mang Tomas and the country’s famed banana ketchup are buying as many of them as they can in response to an alleged ban that is currently being set up by the United States. These reports also say that stores that still have the items are grossly inflating their prices, a phenomenon noted in a host of different TikTok videos.

In short, this ruling simply prevents new versions of these products from entering the United States. It does not stop those who already have the product from selling it—which explains why the internet is slowly being filled with videos of people being shocked at how their formerly less-than-$3 condiment now costs $20 or more.

For example, in this video from TikTok user @jcvllnv02, she reveals her shock at the prices Walmart is charging for these items. For context, while prices varied, the original cost for these items tended to hover around just a few dollars.

That said, this isn’t the end of the road for lovers of these condiments. The FDA is simply requesting that manufacturers reformulate their items to remove these ingredients, at which point they will be allowed to be imported into the U.S. once more. However, it is unclear when this might happen.

Manufacturers have already reformulated the products to remove the banned substances and reship will be coming to the USA shortly. by @ricefeed

UK chain Pho Restaurant has publicly responded to backlash after TikTok users discovered that the white-founded business has trademarked the common Vietnamese word “pho.” This isn’t the first time the company has faced scrutiny about this trademark, which dates back to the 2000s.

Pho Restaurant released a statement addressing the uproar on Wednesday, claiming that its trademark has been “misunderstood.”

“Let us categorically say — we would never attempt to trademark this dish [pho],” Pho Restaurant wrote in a statement posted to social media. “Like so many of you who have shared passionate comments about this, we believe that phở doesn’t belong to anyone but the people of Vietnam.”

Unfortunately, it does appear as though Pho Restaurant is splitting hairs. While Vietnamese people in the UK are free to continue making, eating, and saying “phở” without getting on Pho Restaurant’s bad side, the business still claims the right to the word “pho.” Some critics have likened it to putting a trademark on the word “burger.” (There are currently no trademarks on the word “burger” relating to food in the UK, though there is one on “BÜRGER”.)

Pho Restaurant was founded by London couple Stephen and Juliette Wall in 2005, after the duo took a trip to Vietnam and “fell in love” with the country’s national dish. Both having a background in marketing, they subsequently filed several trademarks for their company, including filings on the words “PHO,” “Pho,” and “pho” in 2007.

The Walls eventually grew the business into a chain of Vietnamese restaurants, and remained in executive roles after private equity firm TriSpan purchased a majority stake in 2021. Pho Restaurant now has 45 locations across the UK.
“More than 50 other businesses in the UK currently also hold a trademark that relates to the word phở,” wrote Pho Restaurant, ignoring the fact that its trademark doesn’t relate to the word, but straight up is the word. “As for any claims that we are suing Vietnamese businesses, this is simply not true.” by @ricefeed

Around 4 p.m. Tuesday, shortly after the doors of his family-owned and -operated studio in Texas opened for evening classes, An and his father, his mother, his older sister and his younger brother heard shrieks coming from a neighboring business.

The family of five, each with a fourth-degree black belt, run the Yong-in Taekwondo dojo @ayt_taekwondo in Katy, outside Houston. They initially ignored the sounds, assuming they came from employees playing around in their break room. But then a piercing “final scream” prompted the family into action, An said.

His family ran to the store and opened a door. There they found a man on top of a young woman with his hands “in [in]appropriate places” as she attempted to fend him off, An said.

An’s father, Hong, yanked the attacker away by his shirt and pinned him to the ground. An’s sister, Hannah, grabbed the girl and rushed her out of the room while An and his brother helped subdue the attacker.

“It just happened so sudden,” said An, who has been practicing taekwondo for 16 years. “It was all self-defense. The intruder was trying to run away — scratching, biting, anything he could do.”

But An’s dad, a taekwondo grand master, held down the attacker for 10 minutes until law enforcement arrived, he said.

The suspect has been charged with attempted sexual assault and unlawful detention, the sheriff’s department said. by @ricefeed
