3 years ago had the idea of fixing my parent’s dirt patch in their backyard and discovered my love for growing and making my own food, in the kitchen and in the studio!

My art and garden practice have been intertwined ever since I bought a mini test kiln and fire it outside while I garden *highly recommend!* I now am making all sorts of fun food creations out of clay and am selling my items in two states in the US and hope to be able to expand!

Amaco black underglaze pencil
Mayco stoneware clear SW-001
Aardvark clay-bone white
Applied to bisqueware, fired to cone 5

Found out pencils don’t come with instructions… so testing out this underglaze pencil without watching a tutorial, but seems like common sense right? Let’s see how it turns out!
I apply the pencil to bisque fired clay. I did try to apply it to bone dry clay earlier 😅 because again, no instructions haha if you’re wondering, it did not work, so we learn by trial and error!

After the pencil I suggest using a soft brush loaded up with a lot of glaze( I use a clear gloss) because mine started to smear once my brush dried out a little bit, but not a huge deal.

It is currently drying and it will be fired in a few weeks! Sorry to keep the suspense, but follow along if you want to see if how it turns out!

I had to move out of my studio this month.
It’s being rented out to someone else so I am moving all my art into my garage. I’ve spent several late nights packing things up and clearing the space out. It has been bittersweet to say the least! From the studio of #riceymei 💫 I create abstracted paintings of people and places that inspire me. If I’m painting a person, I ask a series of questions that inform the shapes, gestures, lines, colors that make up each portrait. Favorite foods, where they live, things that make them who they are, not just what comes from their appearance.

My ceramic foods are my way of adding play into my work, yet is a desire for me to understand identity. Everyone gravitates towards different foods. We share food as an act of love. We reduce food to shed an identity. How does food shape who we are?

And lastly, my embroidery and mixed media work are an experiment, my way of contexualizing my thoughts, places, events, everyday life into a map like object. Motifs and symbols are created to tell a story. My fiber projects go everywhere with me. In the car while I drop off kids, on our trips to see new places, anywhere I get a spare moment. These works feel inspired by traditional Chinese embroideries I grew up with in my childhood home.

Quick sketch as I quiet my mind 🍃

Mind you I’m making this all while my toddler jumps and screams a song on my back and my 10 month old just went down for a nap after a long night up from teething.

Sometimes art is the only way to escape the chaos.
This piece feels soft, imperfect, yes sophisticated. I love the mix of materials. I am using canvas and yarn I had from my undergrad 6 years ago. It fell out of my materials and during the chaos I intuitively just grabbed it and started experimenting with it. Then ideas started flowing and I was getting excited. This is what feeds my soul!
In that moment art making calmed me and my energy down. As my daughter watched me it calmed her down too and she started to quietly play with her toys. She later asked if she could learn to do what I was doing.

These are the special moments I’ve dreamed of having for so long. I am so grateful.

These events have changed our lives!!✨

We took our passion for ceramics and floristry and turned it into something new, a space where women, mothers, and creatives who are often putting themselves last (myself included🙈) can finally show up for themselves 💫

We NEED more women taking on hobbies. Not because we have to be good at them or that they have to become something, but because filling your own cup matters. Seriously. Who cares if you’re not a professional. Getting good at anything just takes practice. You have to start somewhere.

So why not start here???

This is our signature Clay & Bloom event, where ikebana floral instruction meets handmade ceramics. You’ll learn how to hand build you’re own clay vessel from scratch(we glaze and fire it for you) and learn the Japanese art of intentional flower arranging. PLUS, you leave with a beautiful handmade vessel by @riceywright ready to hold your very first arrangement.

So this is your reminder that hobbies can change your life. It has changed ours!

We host workshops and private events just like this video. And seriously, doing these events has been a dream come true, we can’t wait to see where we go next!
