A brief look into Brittani’s work is that her practice acts as a personal anthropological investigation into her upbringing in the rural South – specifically, Walton County, Florida. Using photographic, textile, print, and virtual mediums that have both a historical and modern connection with Southern craft.

Last month to catch this beautiful exhibition of pottery items and pottery peoples’ stories while it’s in Orlando!

June 5 & 6, 5-9pm. Crossdraft Ceramics Gallery in Orlando, Florida. Favo Motel Art Studios.

Portrait of a Kiln is a project. An ongoing edition, and eventually, hopefully, a reservoir.

I love good pots, but I love the people that make them even more. When I was rooting about and counting bricks in pictures and doing stupid Fred Olsen and Daniel Rhodes math and sending emails and calling my friends and playing legos with eight pound bricks, the realization that You Can Do What You Can With What You Have eventually settled in my lap like a feather. (Thanks to @dolomite_78 there).

Years after building and firing that kiln, I realized that a bunch of the folks that were interested in the pottery items that it produced had near zero frame of reference for what Building A Kiln meant.

Those same folks each visibly lit up upon seeing pictures of kilns and it became super apparent that the same sort of excitement that I had in making and firing could be translated to people with zero reference in the ceramic arts when the opportunity to share that joy presented itself.

This show is a celebration of those things. A big pottery homie story party. For me and for you and for us and for anyone that happens to walk in the door.

Big hugs to the following folks for propping this idea up and helping to make it happen.

What a wonderful weekend. The galley is quiet now, and only the pots remain. Thanks so much to everyone who came out, and congratulations to everyone who found some work that called to them enough to bring it home. The exhibition will remain in Orlando for awhile I’ll host open house events in coordination with @favo_events in May and June and then the show is off to @cohab.space in High Point, NC.
I am happy to coordinate viewings for groups or individuals who cannot make any of the opening reception dates and will also archive and publish all of the portrait photographs and artists’ writing on the Crossdraft gallery website.
A special thank you to all of the artists who participated and to @unitedarts_cf of helping to make this show a reality through their individual artist’s grant programming.

This show is really special. It’s a good thing. That’s why I’m doing it, again; version 2.0. Stories rule, and sharing stories is peak human behavior. This exhibition is a story show. It tells about pottery, kilns and all, but mostly it tells about people. People that are good and people that work really hard to do good stuff just because they like it.

Portrait of a Kiln opens in Orlando, Florida on April 3 & 4, 2026. It will be up until early June. Come and see it.

Portrait of a Kiln: Artist Spotlight

Emma Smith currently lives on the Bruce Peninsula. It’s in Ontario, Canada. But in Emma’s case the term lives in functions more as a home base than a heart base; Emma’s work and approach to making it and living through it transcend traditional references to home or heart.

Emma Smith makes lovely pots. She makes them very well, at that. She has made them in the greater Hamilton area in Ontario and she has made them in countless other places across the globe. Her work in clay is only a glimpse of a life lived; subscribing to calls of the moment and pursuing first and foremost the things that make a human a whole person. Emma walks and swims and works and does as she will. She dances, literally: alone and in tandem. Her penchant for the rhythms of movement and travel and traverse, a seed seemingly laced into the very core of her making cycles, seem inseparable from her approach to making and firing her work. Emma is equally at home in an iced over lake on the shores of a quiet and frozen tundra as she is at the helm of an ashy and angsty firebox: both phenomena are quieted and laid calm in the presence of a woman who has arrived with a purpose and plain intent.

I am delighted and honored to have the words and works of Emma in this exhibition. I would like to encourage each of you to take a quiet moment to visit her own words and images as well, EMMA. She is an outstanding writer, an uncommon character and a phenomenal maker.

Portrait of a Kiln: Artist Spotlight

David Banga lives and works in Mancos, Colorado, where for the last 20 years he has grown vegetables for weekly farmers markets on a few swampy acres of the high mountain desert.
Banga first studied ceramics under Mike Lalone at Dr.Phillips high school. This is where he got hooked on wood firing. Later he studied under professor Hadi Abbas as a student at the University of Central Florida. This was prior to the turn of the millennium. David went on to attend graduate school at Utah State University with John Neely and spent some time in Australia studying at Southern Cross University with Tony Nankervis. Banga just recently started up a studio practice alongside his agricultural endeavors in Colorado. I heard he has a great approach to celadons. I believe that, too.
David recently completed the construction of a single chamber wood fired kiln on his Colorado farm property and will be sending a batch of fresh pots southward for this exhibition, straight from the kiln’s maiden voyage. It is my pleasure to share the work of David Banga and I am genuinely delighted to be hosting him in this exhibition.

Portrait of a Kiln: Artist Spotlight

Josh Copus is an artist based out of Marshall, North Carolina. To those who know Josh, they will know that he wears more hats than just being an artist based out of Marshall, North Carolina; those same folks will also know that above all else, Josh is an Artist.

A child from the heart of Floyd, Virginia (props to the @thefloydcountrystore ), Josh’s upbringing was built directly upon a foundation of community, independent direction and an unfettered approach to moving through the world. His work, ceramics and otherwise, are a direct extension and reflection of this.

Josh is an advocate and active participant in many things, but at his core is clay. Clay As Connection. His journey into clay didn’t begin with burning down a house or orchestrating community brick making projects but it has included both of those things and these sorts of moments have been and continue to be critical to his life as an artist. Josh’s enthusiasm for ceramics is boundless and that energy has echoed outward in all directions. Josh is also a proponent of People. And of Place. As a result, his connection with the people that exist in places, as well as the landscape of those places, physical and otherwise, has informed his practice and continues to unfold in myriad ways.

Many of you in the ceramics world may know Josh. Many people outside of that world are likely in the same boat. For those who don’t, I am happy to make this introduction.

I am honored to present an opportunity to see and read about some of Josh’s story; to pick up and touch his pots and to catch a glimpse of a regular pottery person doing their best to just do regular pottery stuff the best way that they know how.

Portrait of a Kiln: Artist Spotlight

Candice Hensley was raised in the middle of nowhere, or more specifically, on the outskirts of the rural township of Stanford, Kentucky.

Born the daughter of an English teacher and a welder, her early aspirations in broadcast journalism were cast aside in the face of personal loss and she eventually found her way to, and through, clay.

This shift occurred in 2005. The loss of a parent can deeply affect our perspectives on life, and in Hensley’s case this shift called for seeking out and sharing joy. As with so many accidental potters, Candice says that she found this solace and joy at the edge of a small college campus: The Art Barn at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.

Since then she has not looked back: through the work-study program at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, production work at Pigeon River Pottery, studio assistant to Odyssey Clay Works and a variety of assistant positions to ceramic artists in the Western Carolina region, she is now a member of Clayspace in Asheville and an accomplished studio potter.

Candice works in porcelain. The most delicate and difficult of all the durable wares. Through her hands, she guides each particle of this creamy and glassine mud into forms that focus on her favorite things: flowers & food. Her classic and elegant forms intend only to serve and elevate everyday use.

Candice is currently a regular presence and de facto kiln-mom at the site of Joey Sheehan’s Golden Antelope kiln in Walnut, North Carolina (@joeymakespots). She is also an actual mom and yet remains a full time artist, operating out of a home studio in nearby Candler where she is in the process of designing and building a wood fired kiln at her home studio with her longtime firing companion and fellow ceramic artist Will Dickert.
I am thrilled to have Candice’s elegant porcelain objects inside the walls of the gallery here and genuinely excited to see and share some of her process and insight surrounding the drafting, design and decisions that come along with bringing a new kiln into the world.

Portrait of a Kiln: Artist Spotlight

Will Dickert was raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southern Appalachia. The strength of his quiet demeanor and his ability to show up with perfectly tender goods from the grill, without needing to announce that he’s about to do so, are a testament to these roots. He also makes really good pots. Without needing to tell you about that either. Sometimes things are best served ready rather than talked about and this form of grace is Will Dickert’s wheelhouse.
There is a quality to Will’s work that echoes this approach to holding space. In the sea of ceramics that is Western North Carolina, Dickert’s work quietly holds its own; his forms are a vibrant exploration of his chosen craft and are immediately recognizable as his own. Being rooted in the traditions of technical proficiency, material fluency and direct engagement with every aspect of the ceramics process, his current work has moved and grown through years of dialing in the nuances of objects intended for specific service into the realm of open form; offering possibility alongside purpose, he makes objects that ‘transcend being defined by how it was made or what it functions as’ and simply present themselves as pots.
Will is currently designing and building a wood fired kiln with Candice Hensley in Candler, North Carolina and I am proud to share his work here in Crossdraft Ceramics Gallery.
