ARTIST NEWS | An extension of his artistic practice, Theaster Gates has acquired Pickard China, the last remaining American manufacturer of fine porcelain.

Founded in 1893 and based in Antioch, Illinois, the historic company represents a longstanding tradition of American artisanal production and material craftsmanship. The acquisition reflects Gates’s sustained engagement with ceramics, cultural preservation, and the transformation of existing industrial and institutional infrastructures into sites of renewed artistic and social possibility. Building upon his longstanding commitment to safeguarding cultural legacies and histories of making, Gates envisions a new chapter for Pickard that situates traditional craftsmanship within contemporary artistic discourse, while advancing the future of American porcelain production.

TOMORROW | Torkwase Dyson’s solo exhibition at Kunsthaus Bregenz opens bringing together architectural sculptures, newly conceived paintings, and an immersive soundscape. The KUB exhibition is the first solo presentation of Dyson’s work in Austria.

The exhibition encompasses multiple of the museum’s levels, beginning on the ground floor with a monumental architectural intervention comprising two black, sail-shaped sculptural forms that transform the spatial experience of Peter Zumthor’s architecture. On the second floor, a darkened gallery brings together stop-motion animation, an immersive soundscape, and thirty-four small canvases, constituting the score. The exhibition also includes a series of large-scale paintings exploring waterways and infrastructures as sites of colonial trauma, invention, and liberation, extending Dyson’s investigations into the relationships between geography, spatial autonomy, and Black lived experience.

On view through January 24, 2027.

ON VIEW | “We are living in a very historical moment in the world where everything seems very brutal and violent. For me, it’s important to try to send a message of the opposite.”

On view at GRAY Chicago, Beyond Silence features Jaume Plensa’s monumental carved-wood reliefs, large sculptural portraits in cast iron and granite, and intimately-scaled bronze works. Moving between architectural monumentality and intimate encounters, Plensa’s exploration of scale and material invites viewers to consider the human figure as a universal form through which to evoke quietude, introspection, and a shared humanity.

Jaume Plensa: Beyond Silence is on view through December 19.

THIS WEEK | Opening on October 17 at Kunsthaus Bregenz, Torkwase Dyson’s first solo exhibition in Austria brings together monumental architectural sculptures, painting, animation, and sound in an expansive investigation of Black Geographies and the historical, political, and ecological dimensions of space.

Transforming Peter Zumthor’s architecture through a series of site-specific interventions, Dyson presents monumental sculptural forms — “hypershapes” — rooted in her theory of Black Compositional Thought. Across the museum’s floors, architectural sculptures, newly conceived paintings, and an immersive soundscape interrogate histories of displacement and dispossession while foregrounding the ways Black communities have transformed and invented spaces of freedom and self-determination.

On view through January 24, 2027.

NEW RELEASE | GRAY is pleased to announce the release of Theaster Gates: OH, YOU’VE GOT TO COME BACK TO THE CITY, a fully illustrated catalogue documenting Gates’s 2025 exhibition at GRAY Chicago.

The exhibition brought together tar paintings, sculpture, and installation to tell an allegory of a city in decay and the potential contained within its ruins, drawing its premise from a song by Chicago musician and poet Marvin Tate in which the City, personified, attempts to lure its residents back from the suburbs.

The catalog features an essay titled “Theatricality and Conjuration” by David J. Levin, the Alice H. and Stanley G. Harris Distinguished Service Professor of Germanic Studies, Cinema and Media Studies, and Theater and Performance Studies at the University of Chicago.

UPCOMING | Join Candida Alvarez at El Museo del Barrio on Friday, October 9, from 5–7 PM, for the launch of Candida Alvarez: Circle, Point, Hoop, a new bilingual publication surveying nearly five decades of the artist’s practice.

Alvarez will be joined in conversation by catalogue contributors Zuna Maza and Adriana Zavala, moderated by Abdiel D. Segarra Ríos. Published by El Museo del Barrio and KMEC Books, the volume accompanies Alvarez’s landmark 2025 exhibition—the artist’s first large-scale museum survey and first solo presentation in New York City since 1993.

Circle, Point, Hoop at El Museo del Barrio was Brooklyn-born artist Candida Alvarez’s first large-scale museum survey and first solo presentation in New York City since 1993. The bilingual catalogue, with a richly illustrated plate section, offers an expansive entry point into her nearly fifty-year career, and includes commissioned essays by Shiben Banerji, Terry R. Myers, Susanna V. Temkin, and Adriana Zavala, and texts by the exhibition’s curators Rodrigo Moura and Zuna Maza.

ON VIEW | Jaume Plensa: Remote, Serene, Ethereal extends the artist’s enduring investigation of the figure and its capacity to evoke a shared sense of humanity.

Co-presented by GRAY and Galerie Lelong, the exhibition brings together three monumental painted-bronze portraits with a suite of site-specific charcoal wall drawings. While the foundational images in his portrait works come from specific figures from his community in Barcelona, the forms pull away from those individualities and move toward a more universal collective when elongated and monumentally scaled.

On view through December 19 at GRAY New York.

ON VIEW | Now on view at The Joan and Martin Goldfarb Gallery at York University in Toronto, Torkwase Dyson’s The Distance Inside Us (Bird and Lava) explores the literal and conceptual spaces of liberation and confinement amid ecological crisis.

Curated by Lillian O’Brien and spanning all three gallery spaces, the exhibition is a culmination of an ongoing series entitled Bird and Lava which meditates on the dense and fluid variations of space to emphasize a liminal state of belonging.

The exhibition draws on Dyson’s exploration of Black Compositional Thought, or the way in which abstraction operates as a means of imagining spatial, ecological, and political possibility. Referencing “The Clearing” in Toni Morrison’s Beloved—a space of freedom, improvisation, and collectivity—Dyson positions pluralism and adaptability as essential conditions for liberation and ecological repair.

On view through March 6, 2027.
