Velvet Hour by night
Highlighting the extraordinary efforts that went into the redesign of our room in our @kbshowhouse room.
Scott Daniel Strickstein @scott_daniel accepted the enormous task of creating a site specific fireplace sculpture, with integrated lighting and all, in an impossible timeline.
Richard Haining @richardhaining created a trio of commissioned wooden vessels made from decommissioned New York City water tower wood, to add an airiness to the elevation.
Grietje Schepers @grietjeschepers felt chandelier illuminates the entire space while tempering the 18’ ceilings to create an intimate environment.
Paul Michael Graves @paulmichaelgraves hand painted frieze and ceiling add visual interest and help break up the height of the space.
@romeomivekannin painting presiding over the sofa, reflecting in the mirror. He paints his face into historic portraits to reclaim a place within the images and history. His works ask us to reconsider how history is remembered.

These are some of the collaborative, bespoke efforts that went into our Kips Bay Showhouse room this year.

Richard Haining’s STACKED Side Tables, handcrafted from salvaged walnut and now on view at Wexler Gallery in New York.
Using his signature STACKED process, Haining builds each piece layer by layer from reclaimed wood before sculpting and finishing the surface entirely by hand. The result celebrates the material’s natural variation while transforming what was once discarded into an enduring work of functional design.

Join us on September 17 at 3:00 PM for a conversation between Richard Haining and design historian Daniella Ohad, presented as part of the New York Design Center’s What’s New, What’s Next 2026. Together, they’ll explore Haining’s process, influences, and approach to material and craft.

From a decommissioned NYC Water Tower to Venice.

My STACKED Pronghorn Vessel, made from salvaged Alaskan Cedar with a charred surface, has been selected for Homo Faber 2026: An Island of Light, opening tomorrow at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice.

Still feels a little surreal.

On view at 200 Lex! Richard Haining’s “STACKED 10 Bulb Chandelier” transforms salvaged walnut into a luminous architectural presence. At 60 inches in diameter, this monumental work expands upon the artist’s celebrated 36-inch chandelier, merging influences from Art Nouveau and the American Studio Craft movement through Haining’s distinctly contemporary approach to design.

Crafted from thousands of individually stacked pieces of reclaimed wood sourced from New York City’s discarded architectural and industrial landscape, the chandelier embodies a process of renewal. Built layer by layer like a coiled ceramic vessel or an analog 3D print, each form is shaped by hand before being refined into a seamless surface. The subtle shifts in color and grain reveal the material’s previous life—preserving a visible record of time, place, and transformation within a singular sculptural object. taken in New York Design Center by @richardhaining
