“Faux Tortoise Shell Cabinetry and Trim” Acrylic and oil. The use of tortoise shell as a decorative element dates back to Ancient Greece and Rome and saw its zenith in the Boulle cabinetry veneers of 17th century France. Up into the early 20th century it was prized for its translucency in everything from combs to jewelry and snuff boxes. It wasn’t usually actual tortoise but from the Hawksbill Sea Turtle, now an endangered species and its use prohibited. Hence my faux tortoise shell. For the designer Lisa Frantz. #decorativepainting #fauxtortoiseshell #fauxpainting #fauxfinishes #richardsmithstudios by @richardsmithstudios
