I got to spend August 11th with this lovely Leo for a Tuesday birthday sneakaway in Michigan’s thumb. We did blueberry pie and strawberries. We did a Great Lake too, with beautiful rocks each so special in their own way that they came home to live with us. And there was a the sweet tiny postcard camper in the woods and an evening hike. But mostly there was super serene and cool Karen, stepping into her newish decade with authority, clarity, and so much style. I am lucky to be on this journey with you @karenfahle ! ❤️ by @richfahle

Love this tribe. Love the good energy and warmth that flows so easily during the increasingly rare times when we’re able to be together as an expanding fam. And love to see @karenfahle in the middle of it all, clearly in her happiest element. And of course, congratulations @owenfahle on your graduation from the @uva_amsterdam ! So glad we could all gather to celebrate with you. Onward! #proudpapa taken in Vondelpark by @richfahle

Today is Brian Lamb’s last official day at the @cspan offices in Washington, DC. Back in 1993 I had the amazingly good fortune to join the C-SPAN team (thank you @bark211!), traveling across the United States on a 45-foot mobile production Bus. After that fun stint, I ran Comms for the network, working with an incredible team of committed colleagues, so many of whom I stay in touch with still. What Brian created, with the leadership and energy of so many others, is nothing short of historic.

I learned so much at C-SPAN, and am proud of the good work we did together then, and that the team continues to do today. And in a true full circle moment, my oldest son @aidanfahle did a turn on the C-SPAN Bus himself as a summer intern, 20-something years after I left.

Thank you, Brian! What a run! Thank you for your vision and mentorship, for your support of all that is good and necessary in media and politics. You’re a legend in DC, but you’re an even bigger legend in the Fahle household. by @richfahle

Back in the 80s for the year I was a student at Western Michigan University, my dad would drop me off at the Michigan Central station in Detroit for the Amtrak ride back to Kalamazoo. This was just a few years before the station was outright abandoned and long past its early/mid-century heyday. The building was cavernous, dark, moody. But the beauty was captivating, the building’s history seeping out of the amazingly ornate walls and Guastavino tile vaulted ceilings.

Fast forward 40 years to early 2023 and now I’m working at the Newlab Michigan Central building, for Newlab and now Airspace Link, in the shadows of the same Michigan Central station. A building that for 35 years had become a hulking visual symbol of Detroit’s decay, but was now a symbol of exciting energy and innovation. I start and end every weekday looking at this beautiful building. I can’t tell you how many pictures I’ve snapped of it. It seems to take on a new personality each day, whether in morning light, dusk or in its nighttime elegance. The reopening of Michigan Central today means a lot to Detroit. There are concerns, of course, for the Corktown and SW Detroit neighborhoods and residents that surround the station. That is a challenge for the coming days and weeks. Today in Detroit though, it’s celebration day. Feeling very fortunate to see this moment up close, and thankful for all the good people I’ve met along the way who have played such an important role in bringing this building and surrounding campus back to life.

I’m so excited and proud for my daughter @norafahle. All of my kids are amazing, but last week was all about Nora’s big moment—graduation ceremony for her Master’s degree at @soasuni! Serious proud parent moment. Plus Nora, we have a new important life goal: Let’s buy up all the Rough Trade Essentials-need all of them! Thankful for the glorious seven days of London sunny summer weather. Can’t wait to come back!

Here’s a pic of two mothers. One of these moms, my mother-in-law Nancy, will likely be upset that I posted this from our visit this weekend to upstate NY. She'll have issues with the knees showing, or the dish towel over her shoulder, or her hair--something. She's never liked having her photo taken, particularly this candid, unscripted kind where she hasn't had a chance to prep and primp first. But what I see is a picture of an evolving mother-daughter relationship, one that has become more adult and deeper and more connected, despite the terribly tricky emotional terrain that comes with families getting older.

The other mom here is my wife Karen, who has gently guided our own four kids throughout their lives--and now into adult worlds on their own--with so much patience, positivity, and genuine excitement for who each is becoming, and where each want to go. All four live away from us now, in England and the Netherlands, and nothing could make Karen more happy than their embrace of life experiences out there, out in the world.

Meanwhile, my own mother lives on the 3rd floor memory care unit of an assisted living facility here in Michigan, and no longer remembers that she is a mom. And while I spent a good amount of my own adult years thinking my mom wasn't doing motherhood right, I don't think that anymore. I look at her now and know that life can be really hard and she did what she could. We're all OK. These days, I don't call her "mom." That name doesn't evoke a response anymore, but she always looks up when I say her name. We listen to music and hang out and sometimes she laughs really hard at something she thinks is somehow, mysteriously hilarious. That's where we are now. Sort of post-mom.

I'm fascinated by the evolving role of mothers. The powerful, beautiful influence they have in our lives and to each other. Mostly though today, I'm thankful that my children have their mom to be that hugely influential person in their lives. Life is good. Happy Mother's Day @karenfahle ! by @richfahle

I really love the story of writer Louise Penny. After a successful 18 year career at the Canadian Broadcast Corporation, she left to chase the dream she'd had since she was an 8-year-old girl: To become a writer. She spent the next five years attempting—unsuccessfully—to write a historical novel, fighting writer's block, self doubt, and bouts of imposter syndrome. But she never abandoned the dream. Along the way, she married, moved to a small town in the eastern townships region of Quebec, connected with a new community of friends and supporters, and ultimately found her writing inspiration. 18 Three Pines/Gamache books later, I’d say she’s found her audience! Plus, the new Three Pines adaptation, starring Alfred Molina as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, launches today on Amazon Prime TV. Great night with Louise! Thankful! And thankful too to the amazing team at @literatibookstore who have become a vitally important cultural hub in Ann Arbor. taken in Rackham Auditorium by @richfahle

Yesterday marked 30 years of marriage with this lovely, @karenfahle. Thirty years means lots of time to feel all of the emotions, and a few other feelings too. Fire, heat, joy, disappointment, pride, worry, wonder, family, fear, power, possibility! We continue on, striding with purpose as if maybe we know what we’re doing, or at least know how to pretend that we do. Onward, to the Next 30. What will happen next? We are ready to find out. Not scared with this one next to me. by @richfahle

Mother’s Day has always been a good day in our house. This year’s version, with all the children off and far away on their own adventures, feels particularly special. Has been an incredible journey with this crew, made sweeter, surer, and safer by the thoughtful mothering, parenting, and friendship of @karenfahle-for our kids, our parents, and of course, for me. Lots more ahead, but feeling fortunate today for this wild and precious life! And for being able to do it our way! #mothersday by @richfahle
