I honestly don’t know where to even begin.
Hard to put into words the impact this guy has had on me and so many others. Positive energy meets insanity and kindness. He’s the real deal. Skater, artist, friend, grafter, lover, fighter and everything in between. Always cheering for the underdog and raising the spirits of all in his orbit. Jays an absolute original. Happy 50th birthday Dordsman. Keep her lit sir. 🔥

Rest in peace Glen Hansard.

I crossed paths with Glen a handful of times over the years with @othervoiceslive and he was always really cool to me. Big waves of grief felt across the land today.
This portrait was shot in Dingle, Co. Kerry on December 4th, 2015.

Joey Lynch. Ollie, Smithfield Dublin, 2003(ish). This was shot for an interview we were doing for Sidewalk magazine. Joey and I were both working together at G1 skate shop that summer so getting photos for this came pretty easily. No big plans, we just headed out after locking up the shop on O’Connell Street, said our daily goodbyes to Anto who sold the Evening Herald from his stall on the street outside and then went into the city to try find something to shoot. Bruce had eyed up this spot that was only there for a short while near Smithfield and as far as I know nobody else ever skated it. At this time Joey was skating so well - he was really powerful and stylish at the same time. We got photos almost every mission we went on and rarely had a filmer with us. The craic and banter was always good hanging out together, so many stupid in jokes and just enjoying each other’s company in general. I honestly don’t remember the specifics of a lot of it but I do remember just laughing a lot. Joey drifted away from skating not long after this to pursue music but he still skates the odd time and is a good friend to this day. Walkinstown’s finest, so much love for Fat Joe out there. @josesalsa ⚡️

Before @petrialenehan made beautiful paintings she made beautiful clothes.

Myself & @aisfarinella were lucky enough to get to collaborate together on a few of her campaigns over the years. This one was shot with Teresa Lui in Connemara in 2019.

I’m reviewing lots of work at the moment as I begin to gather material for a new website I am working on with the good people @associate.studio & @svmorganwork It’s cool looking back and finding things I missed the first time around.

Stay tuned 👀 by @richgilligan

Villagers. Dublin, 2010.

Flashback to South Studios on New Row South in Dublin 8 where I had my first ever shared studio space alongside so many amazing people, many of whom I’m still collaborating with sixteen years later. I’m conscious of not going down a full nostalgia rabbit hole here as there’s still so much good stuff happening RIGHT NOW (Don’t believe the haters - there actually is!) but it’s only with the passing of time that I can fully appreciate just how special this time was for young creative folk finding their way in Dublin. I was so lucky to be a part of this era. Rent was still fairly affordable, studio space was cheap & the collective collaborative energy that was alive at that time was just incredible. Everyone winging it and for the most part always trying to carry each other through the highs and lows of it all. Totally oblivious to the responsibilities that lay ahead & the dizzying changes that were coming for the city & its culture.

When I got the call from Domino records London office (Thanks Colleen!) asking me if I was interested in working on the artwork & promo for Villagers first album - the 2010, Mercury Prize nominated belter “Becoming a Jackal” I had to pull the car over as I genuinely thought it was a prank call. I’d worked with Conor once before on a small editorial shoot & we were friends of friends but I couldn’t believe he’d convinced the label to get me to work on the artwork. The confidence boost this gave me at that time was huge.

So here are 2 photos from that day. The first was shot with my Wista 4x5 Large format camera on the now defunct type 55 Polaroid film (you got a neg & a print!) & the second shot was in Conor’s kitchen in this huge old house near Malahide where half of Dublin seemed to be living at that time. This was with my Hasselblad on Kodak Portra 160NC film.

Last year I got to work on the photography for a new book: Make Change That Lasts by @drchatterjee for the good folk @penguinlifebooks

We spent a few days in a rural location by the sea, finding ways to make portraits & details that were tuned to the same frequency as the message of the book. Getting to spend this time with Rangan was good medicine. A super positive human whose main goal is to empower people to take control of their lives and make meaningful changes that last. He’s the real deal. Grateful to have been given so much trust and freedom on this one. by @richgilligan

Here are the spreads from a small book/zine project I did with the kind support of @carharttwip in Brooklyn, NY with Max Palmer in 2017. This was published to coincide with an exhibition of Max’s sculptures titled, Improper Slope which opened on May 4th 2017.

Over a few months that spring I documented Max working away in his studio & skating around Brooklyn. Turned out he’s one of the coolest people I’ve ever encountered. A truly humble character, endlessly curious with an incredible natural ability as an artist/skateboarder. Max has a way of navigating the world that’s so unique to him as a person. His talents are this perfect expression of his personality. I’m really glad we crossed paths.

I love printed matter so much.
It’s hard to recreate the feeling of picking up a book in your own hands and rediscovering work over time, flaws and all. At the time I remember stressing because the paper was so lightweight that there was significant bleed through from the inks on each page & now that’s one of favorite things about it. It’s beautiful because of its imperfections.

The world can feel so heavy & overwhelming these days. There’s plenty of reasons to give up, get cynical and not give a fuck, but making things for the joy of pure creativity is still a powerful & transformative experience.

Keep going.

This portrait was commissioned by The Last Magazine in NYC this time 10 years ago. A then 20 year old Timotheé turned up at my tiny shared studio in Brooklyn navy yard full of energy and an infectious enthusiasm. He was already really established as an actor at this point but looking back on it now it feels like this portrait was shot just on the cusp of him really blowing up. He wanted to DJ as we were shooting and was blasting loads of hip hop and kinda bouncing around rapping every word and laughing. He was just super cool to everyone working on the shoot and it was one of those rare, fun, easygoing days where it really didn’t feel like work at all…
