A void is left in the hearts of our Pittsburgh family. A place I’d considered a second home, a site of comfort and community, and a host of good memories will be sunsetting in just a few weeks. This is a reminder to support your small businesses, support your local venues, support local musicians, and, most importantly, support your family. The countless times I’d shared the @pghwinery stage with lifelong friends, and celebrated the happiest day of my life with loved ones, only scratch the surface of the amount of joy produced along Penn Avenue over the years. Many thanks to @antjar, @timgaber, and the amazing @pghwinery folks for the memories, the music, and the glasses of vino. by @richierichwich

Corporal Harry Curry, who guarded the colors of the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry as his regiment repelled Confederate attacks against Little Round Top on July 2, 1863. He returned home to Pittsburgh after the Civil War, where he became a business partner of Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick. In 2026 his likeness returned to Little Round Top for the first time, likely, since the dedication of his regiment’s monument in the late 19th century. This particular cabinet card is a “photoshopped” version of young Curry that was included in the 155th Pennsylvania’s regimental history, Under the Maltese Cross (1910), published a decade after his death. by @richierichwich

Within two years of John Brown’s execution for his role in orchestrating the 1859 Harper’s Ferry raid, fellow abolitionists and supporters sung his praises and mourned his loss in the lyrics of “John Brown’s Body” - a tune that famously conjured up imagery of him lying “moldering in the grave.”Three decades after the end of the Civil War that Brown predicted, Seneca Ray Stoddard photographed his final resting place at Brown’s farm in North Elba, New York. This photo is now captioned by the lyrics uttered by millions of people, both enslaved and free; lyrics that gave his story added power through the nation’s bloodiest conflict and into the 20th century. by @richierichwich

It’s been a long day, and an especially long year, but connecting with a landscape such as this, and at such an important time, is a stark reminder that there is much work left to be done. Though the guns of Gettysburg fell silent long ago, the commemorative spirit, words, and deeds of those who struggled here serve as reminders that there is a necessity to continue the fight for a more perfect union, just 250 years after its birth. by @richierichwich

There’s one semester of my graduate program left and I can’t thank @kbinando enough for helping me past the finish line while supporting my vicious habits.Oh, and I held a Lincoln-endorsed document 163 years after the ink dried. That was cool. by @richierichwich

Today is my least favorite day of the year. On June 26, 2019 at 4:35am, and less than a day since my father was admitted to hospice care, I woke up to the news that he had passed. The feeling continues to haunt me to this day, though I still find myself picking up the phone to share with him good news from time to time. Always tell your people you love them. by @richierichwich
