Back in 2004, Chad Powers started selling BMX gear out of a van while traveling to skateparks and races along the East Coast. Today, twenty-two years later, his Richmond business, @powersbmxshop, brought riders and friends together from far and wide to celebrate.

The anniversary jam featured riding on ramps and dirt jumps built by Chad and a community of supporters, along with live music, food, and plenty of prizes. Inside, the Powers BMX Museum showcases the sport’s history through a collection Chad has built over the years.

We stopped by to catch some of the riding and celebrate what he has accomplished. Happy anniversary to Chad and the tight-knit BMX family that has grown alongside him!

@cirqueparis is 90 minutes of literal ACTION PACKED entertainment - there are BMX trick riders, jugglers, high flying aerialists, nimble acrobats (pulling themselves up by their TEETH), comedic clowns and they even pulled up audience members on stage for a performance (me included 🤣) 🎪🤡🤹

Seriously such a fun date activity or something to do with your family or friends!! Tickets are available for Richmond shows until October 25th and the show is located under the big top at Chesterfield Towne Center!

Concessions include popcorn, cotton candy, nachos, water, and soda! There are also souvenirs and face painting 🎭🎨

Alex Sam was spotting the potential in classmates’ old sneakers long before he had a storefront on Broad Street.

This Richmond entrepreneur got his start back in middle school, buying used pairs, cleaning them up, and reselling them. In December 2020, Alex and Thomas Vu opened @KicksBoomin’s first storefront. Today, you’ll find the sneaker and streetwear shop at 4 E. Broad.

We dropped in to catch up with Alex, now the shop’s sole owner, and see what’s on the shelves.

🎶 Richmond’s own @tenn1sh2 supplies the soundtrack with “Up at the Git Down.”

Roughly twenty gallons of paint, three weeks, and no grid! Working from a boom lift, @humblemakesart sketched “The Great Heron” with a roller stick, then painted it mostly by brush and roller at @altitudeonmainrva.

Asked to capture Richmond’s growth, @humblemakesart chose a great blue heron, a familiar sight along the James, and surrounded it with tall green stalks reaching skyward. Here’s a look at how it came together.

Richmond artist Grace Mae Huddleston (@by.gracemae) has teamed up with @capitalregionlandconservancy on a new “Protect the Land You Love” collection celebrating the landscapes, plants, and wildlife that make this region worth protecting.

The design made its debut at CRLC’s “Fields, Forests + Streams: Bluegrass & Barbecue Benefit,” where guests screen-printed their own tea towels. Now the artwork is available on short- and long-sleeve tees and hoodies, with proceeds supporting the nonprofit’s conservation efforts.

Huddleston, a Richmond based printmaker and illustrator, creates bold work inspired by Virginia’s flora and fauna. Her past clients include the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, James River Association, and Betsy from Mars.

Shop the collection through @bonfire, and learn more about CRLC’s work at @capitalregionlandconservancy. To date, the organization has helped protect more than 16,000 acres of environmentally and culturally significant land and water across the Richmond region. by @richmondgrid

A new @mendingwallsrva mural is taking shape at 1312 Hull St. in Manchester. That’s right, Richmond artists @noahscalin and @adrawingtable are at it again, this time creating their third mural in the Trust Building/s series. Their latest collab is centered on Consistency.

The mural is still a work in progress, but its character is already on full display, including an inspiring field of individually painted rocks created during the recent community paint day. We stopped by today for a closer look at what’s taking shape. More to come as this impressive piece is completed.

Richmond’s @hardywood and @starrhillbrewery have officially joined forces, bringing together two of the Commonwealth’s original craft beer heavyweights.

The deal closed October 1 following an operational partnership between the two breweries that began last year. Hardywood says the transaction was structured as an all-equity acquisition, with Starr Hill’s ownership, leadership, employees, and brand remaining in place.

And for now, the beer will keep flowing where it always has. Both breweries will continue operating and brewing at their existing digs while all nine Hardywood and Starr Hill taprooms remain open. What will begin to change with this power-couple move: more collabs between the breweries, shared releases, and probably a few experiments along the way.

Hardywood, born in the River City way back in 2011, and Starr Hill, founded in Charlottesville even earlier in 1999 and now based in Crozet, rank as Virginia’s No. 1 and No. 2 craft brewers by volume according to the folks at NielsenIQ. Together, their nine taprooms bring in more than 900,000 thirsty visitors a year.
