A cart brimming with bottles of amari for spritzes. A patio crowded with animated “Love Island” fans shouting at the screen when a pair recouples. A karaoke evening with a disco ball spinning above. A bustling market featuring local makers. Add crisp latkes, steaming bowls of matzo ball soup, and sandwiches named after friends and family, and you have the recipe for @susiesrva.

After nearly two years of experimentation, the modern, woman-owned Jewish-Mediterranean deli at 1600 W. Cary St. in the Fan has found its footing as the all-day cafe it originally envisioned — and grown into something more. Owner Yael Cantor says, “It’s like a community space. I say community a lot, but I do mean a place where you can bring friends and meet people.”

Now, the interior is catching up with its earned persona. This week, the restaurant is debuting its updated digs, including a revamped second dining room. (🔗 in bio) #rvadine #susies #richmondmag by @richmondmag

The Richmond Flying Squirrels have until 5 p.m. today to vacate The Diamond, according to the city’s Economic Development Authority.

On Sept. 21, the EDA informed Navigators Baseball LP, the Squirrels’ ownership group, that the lease agreement allowing the team to use the facility terminated upon “completion and occupancy” of a new stadium; in this case, CarMax Park, which opened next door to The Diamond earlier this year.

The team was in violation of the agreement by continuing to use The Diamond to store equipment, inventory for concessions and store merchandise, along with two vehicles, according to the EDA’s letter.

“After October 16, 2026, the EDA will secure the building and change its locks and access credentials. Any entry or attempted entry to The Diamond or the surrounding site after that date by Navigators, or any officer, employee, agent, contractor, or vendor of Navigators, will be treated as trespassing and addressed accordingly.”

On the same day, the EDA also sent a letter to Virginia Commonwealth University informing the athletics department that its baseball team would need a new lease to continue operating at The Diamond.

VCU has been unable to work out an agreement with the Squirrels to play at CarMax Park, so the city offered to begin negotiating a new lease to remain at The Diamond.

VCU, according to The Richmonder, has indicated that it “plans to take that offer.” #richmondmag and #rva by @richmondmag

The city began repaving Mayo Bridge this week as part of a pilot project that will reduce the number of travel lanes from four to two (one each way) for the foreseeable future.

The repaving was needed, according to the Richmond Department of Transportation, as the pavement had “reached the end of its useful life. The bridge currently has a Pavement Condition Index (PCI) of 0, indicating pavement failure and the need for immediate rehabilitation.”

Also, the city wants to test out the lane reduction and gather data prior to converting Mayo Island into a city park, and to assist with future bridge replacement efforts. Bridge construction is expected to be begin in 2029 and require closure of the 14th Street Bridge (two, actually, on both sides of the island) for three years. It’s unclear when the park project will begin.

As far as the repaving, one lane of traffic each way will remain open during construction. The work is taking place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Oct. 23. #richmondmag and #rva by @richmondmag

Mayor Danny Avula joined Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards Tuesday morning for the department’s third quarter crime briefing. The good news? Homicides (-24%), nonfatal shootings (-15%) and robberies (-27% to -30%) are down substantially, while aggravated assaults (1%) and domestic assaults (58%) are up.

Through the first three quarters, Richmond’s 34 homicides are the lowest since 2015; the 139 total shootings (fatal and nonfatal) are the lowest three-month total since 2014.

But that’s not really why Avula was at the press conference at the department’s training facility on Graham Road. Over the weekend, the mayor announced that the city would not be renewing its contract with Flock Safety for roughly 100 license-plate readers scattered throughout the city. Growing public opposition to the on-street surveillance system, and its documented misuse, forced Avula to reconsider his earlier support for the cameras.

It was clear from the press conference that Avula and Edwards were less-than thrilled about the decision. The cameras, Edwards said, have helped the department in finding people and suspects more quickly, among other advantages. It’s also aided in prosecuting cases, particularly those involving shootings, as the technology reduces the need for eyewitness testimony.

Avula said the city was simply listening and letting the community know that the “conversation is changing” leaving the door open to finding a replacement vendor of license-plate cameras. He also said Henrico’s decision to terminate its contract with Flock earlier this month makes the system less effective.

“What I’ve tried to be clear about at every step of this is that this is not a closed decision,” he said. #richmondmag and #rva by @richmondmag

Fans of @papiscreamery know to set alarms and reminders for new ice cream drops. Every Thursday at 7 p.m., the small-batch ice cream company founded by Diego Diaz announces three fleeting flavors. The pints — featuring creative combinations and Mexican-inspired varieties — are limited, and once they’re gone, they’re gone. After finding success in Hampton Roads, Papi’s has introduced a new pint pickup location at 2105 Lake Ave. near Willow Lawn. (🔗 in bio) #papiscreamery #pintshop #richmondmag by @richmondmag
