Well, that chase was a huge success! Dramatic skies and magical light set the stage for an unforgettable evening. The absolute highlight was a stunning rainbow, illuminated by spectacular crawler lightning, with mammatus clouds hanging overhead. It was one of those breathtaking moments that showcase nature at its finest. As a photographer, this is a scene I had imagined many times but never had the opportunity to capture, until now! The last slide of this series features one of the "weaker" lightnings when the rainbow already was fading away. But I like to include it anyway to showcase a little behind the scenes peak from this magical evening.

What an insane storm chase! Huge, beautifully branched cloud-to-ground bolts hammering down like this has been on my bucket list for years at this location. Last night, the sky finally delivered.All four massive strikes happened in a single shot. Within half a second, night turned to day with 4 huge CG's. Pure lightning magic.

Yesterday, madness unfolded in Spain! I had the privilege of photographing the total solar eclipse. A moment that will forever be etched in my memory as one of the most extraordinary spectacles Mother Nature has to offer.

Combining this with the Sun’s low position above the horizon during totality made the shot a real project to do some homework before traveling towards Spain. It required quite a bit of research, from extensive online scouting and calculations to getting out into the field when we are there to determine whether the eclipse could actually be captured above a beautiful piece of Spanish heritage at the right angle, without any problems we didn't foresee.

After all the planning, weather forecast and nowcasting the plan became clear. The location? The magnificent Catedral-Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar in Zaragoza. Together with three incredibly passionate fellow photographers, we knew we had a shot at making it happen.

I decided to make one small adjustment to the original composition. Well, quite literally stepping into the river and positioning myself on a submerged boulder, which happened to provide the perfect platform for my tripod and myself. Almost perfect reflections could be included in the shot by making this adjustment.

And then… it all came together. 85 seconds of totality. 85 seconds of pulling this of. The result, along with some behind-the-scenes images from this incredible adventure, can be found in the slides of this post.

What an experience. What a day. And what a privilege to witness and photograph something so extraordinary at this truly amazing location. taken in Zaragoza, Spain by @rick_bekker

Two years ago, some of the most spectacular auroras I’ve ever witnessed danced across the sky above us. Vibrant green curtains and blood-red pillars stretched high into the heavens, creating one of the most mind-blowing displays I’ve ever had the privilege of capturing. An unforgettable night and one of the most extraordinary events of my photography career.

Truly amazing conditions on the heatherfeelds yesterday! A beautiful layer of mist, combined with a blanket of clouds, the first rays of warm golden sunlight and the blooming heather, created the perfect setting for the following shots.

As you may have already noticed, we’ve experienced quite a significant change in the weather. The short rampup of heat has been pushed out by locally strong storms. My goal was to catch some discrete cells before they merged and evolved into a larger-scale system as they moved across the Benelux countries. The dynamics and wind shear were beautifully visible in these relatively small, yet distinctly supercellular storms.

Shortly after this amazing event there are more opportunities to shoot images that you won't get the chance to shoot another day. A crescent sun is slowely setting, producing a soft, warm bath of golden light and even some lightrays.

You may have noticed the incredible thunderstorms last weekend... well, so did we!
Gijs, Luke, and I pulled an all-nighter chasing and capturing these spectacular storms. The absolute highlight of the night? Intercepting a massive shelf cloud over Bourtange in the first morning light. The perfect grand finale to an intense chase!
