CRISCO CLUB — 1237, rue Sanguinet, au cœur du Red Light.

For approximately 90 extraordinary days during the winter of 1992, a French avant-garde theatre was transformed every weekend into one of Montréal’s most memorable underground clubs.

Robert de la Gauthier played Fridays. Christian Pronovost played Saturdays. Sophie Lanza and Serge Duchesne took over the Venus Lounge. The crowd brought everything else 🙃🙃🙃

Gay and straight. Black and white. Artists, designers, club kids, fashion people, beautiful eccentrics and creatures of the night—all together on one dance floor.

And for us at Juan & Juanita’s, they were our people.
They were the personalities who understood that music, fashion and nightlife were not separate worlds—they were one culture. They came to Juan & Juanita’s to dress for the night, buy their tickets, exchange information and decide where Montréal would be dancing next.

Crisco existed for only a moment, but it helped connect Montréal’s soulful house and queer club culture with the rave movement that was about to transform the city.

Some places last for decades without leaving a trace. Crisco lasted approximately 90 days—and became part of Montréal nightlife history.

@Pierre Viens major nightlife figure who converted the theatre into Crisco. Also known for Le Beat and SKY ... and a few others.

A business card from another lifetime—when most of my friends knew me simply as Rick.

In the 1990s, Juan & Juanita became much more than a store. It was connected to Montreal’s nightlife and to a world where music, fashion, art, personalities and friendships constantly crossed paths.

Lately, conversations with people who were central to that period have brought back memories—and awakened an idea that has been quietly taking shape for some time.

The project is still evolving, so I’m not ready to say too much just yet. But it begins with revisiting Montreal’s House and Techno years through the people who lived them, created them and helped make that scene what it became.

Old photographs, flyers, business cards, music and memories are beginning to resurface. Each one holds part of a much larger story.

This card—and the name written across it—is one small piece of mine.

NEVER too late.
