This is a wild ride.

Step by step moving towards my ultimate goal.

This monograph is designed so that the world never forgets those who created a cultural revolution that is still felt to this very day.

I want this history to be preserved. Not relegated to remainders at a book bin nor do I want folks to do what they do on a daily basis, think that photography is disposable after they consume it on a swipe.

Corporate America thought they could do without, firing thousands of photojournalists and journalists thinking we could be easily replaced.

For the people of the South Bronx, our history is not disposable.

We are the focal point of change around the world and our shout was heard.

For a rep of Puerto Ricans from the Center of the Known Puerto Rican Universe, we tell you, we are far from done telling our history.

There are many that you heard of that claim to influence the culture. A few of them rightly hold claim to it. There are more than a few that I documented that help launch it and you never heard of them. I have, and I documented them as they went about it. How history is written is never in stone, nor those that help elevate it will be erased.

Ricky Flores started documenting life in the South Bronx after he purchased a camera with a small inheritance left by his father in 1979. He began photographing the lives of his friends and family during one of the most turbulent times in the history of the Bronx and New York City.
Over the years, Flores freelanced for The Daily News, The New York Times, The City Sun, and The Village Voice. He was a photojournalist for The Journal News, part of the USAToday Network for 25 years. Flores was recognized for covering the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and is a three-time winner of the New York Press Publishers Award for Spot News for 9/11, Amadou Diallo, and Superstorm Sandy.

I never been to a Kool Herc party or a DJ Mario one either, I guess they didn’t produced enough hand written note cards to make it from central Bronx to the South Bronx. And logistically, the city was still dealing with vestiges of neighborhood tribalism.

I been to those organized by The Electric Company which compromise members of the Magnificent Force rap group, and those parties were lit.

And every single person in that room played a role in building the world wide cultural revolution. I been to those parties before I started shooting as a teen and documented them when I did.

It’s funny that part, how heavily the culture was documented by Puerto Ricans when Black folks and Ricans were partying hard side by side. Now we have these simple ass historians, acting more like the right wing, or the cops, running a COINTELPRO op to create division.

My response is simple, where are you in my photos, or those taken by a generation of photographers, some of the very best in the city, Black and Puerto Rican, where are these historians in those photos?

The numbers were stunning for the fire calls responded to by the FDNY during 1967 to 1989 in the South Bronx. Poorly documented by the FDNY and the city, the numbers run anywhere from 100,000 to 140,000 calls during those years. At the height of the crisis the FDNY responded up 40 calls per day. These numbers do not include what was going on in the rest of the city. Brownsville, East New York, Bedford-Stuyvesant, the Lower East Side, El Barrio, and Harlem were all heavily disinvested by the city, state, and the nation.

What is also clear is that it was happening across the country. The South Bronx was just the poster child and cover for an endemic problem affecting the nation.

The story of the South Bronx points to the deep economic flaw that pervades the country to this day: vicious and systemic financial exploitation by corporations and grifters who make their wealth on the labor of the American people. There is no end in sight, no immediate remedy. The people of this nation are the economic engine of the world and don’t benefit from the unfettered economic support that other countries enjoy to conduct wars at their expense. Disenfranchised to line the pockets of greedy men using tax dollars to bolster their companies, while denying that same support to American families and those with real needs around the world.

The buildings have been mostly rebuilt; once-empty blocks now teeming with people. Those facades masks the daily struggle for families to put food on the table and a roof over their heads.

They don’t care about the politics of the day as they go through their own daily rituals to make it through another day at jobs, most of them begrudging a living wage.

This is the same exact struggle for the people of the South Bronx during those years, a tired refrain, with complacent politicians saying the exact same thing some 59 years on.

The cold fury and restlessness we are seeing has been a long time coming, and it’s absolutely fitting that it’s happening in New York. A worldwide cultural revolution was born here, now it’s time for a political one. by @rickyflores
