When your friends pass away, and take their last ride...many of us are close enough, their widow invites you to come and be "gifted" some of their parts, jackets, gloves...maybe even a motorcycle? My good friend Dave died last year, and this is his jacket. Perfect condition. From the orange & black "Sturgis Model FXB" era. Fits perfect with inside pocket. Knit cuffs keep out wind. Perfect in-town light jacket. On the bike, or off into the store, or coffee shop, or bar. Who's the dapper fella on the Lowrider ?? by @rickynoot

This XLR transmission has a letter R stamped on the pawl carrier? Huh. I can't find anything different from a stock 900 Sportster trans. Maybe the factory stamped it on for quick reference, like it could have C Ratio gears, or D Ratio...or F, G, H, E, J, K, M or N Ratios? No shit. They offered all those different ratios, and a few more for various race tracks and situations. This trans had a "Standard" Ratio....I'm making it a C Ratio. Really boring stuff ! It also has an early style shifter shaft with splines, not smooth. Blasted and really inspected all the gears. They look nice. by @rickynoot

I prefer James (or original Harley) oil pump gaskets. They are thin, proper thickness...but they shrink. I soak them in clean water for like 5-10 minutes. Blot dry with paper towels. Now they will line up with stud holes and gear pockets properly. The gaskets can look old, all rolled up, etc...but they still work. James Gaskets are good. Most all others are too thick or made from the wrong material.
I use Gaskacinch on the gasket(one side only - and also on the cooresponding pump face. by @rickynoot

Here's an option: If your M-53 choke is broken (very common) you can fit an M-88 style choke. Jeremiah (Love Cycles) helped me fit and rig this all up - works great ! You will also need to run the "flat style" air cleaner backing plate. Such a handsome set up...! The Linkert. by @rickynoot

Motorcycle flat track racing is all American. You have Harley-Davidsons with their beautiful sounds on the track, you will have American fans in the grandstands. Sure other brands are welcome, but without H-D racing on the tracks, the series will shrink. H-D sales slump. You have to buy the ticket, ride the rain, bugs on your bike, sweat in your tent, drink the beer with your friends, smell the fumes, eat the grub...and get the handshakes and bro hugs...and reminisce with the pictures. Button (or kick) that thing to life and I'll see you at the next one. Hats off to all of you that supported motorcycle flat track racing any way that you could this year. We appreciate you. Tech: Early Ironhead Sportster Clutch. 1. If you look carefully on the center hub, there's a locating "mark" on a tooth(I painted mine white). 2. On stock steels, line up the notch with this hole(the larger of the two small homes). Have the beveled edge of the plate facing out. 3. If you run the dry plates, file out and deburr the squares so they slide easy on the dogs. 4. The most important...Align the circle on the pressure plate with the notch too. It will work, and release best like this. #sportsterclutch #ironheadsportster by @rickynoot

These aluminum lower fork legs dirty your fork oil much faster than the old chrome steel legs. My early Sportsters with the 33.4 steel front ends....heck, my fork oil still looks new and fresh after 10+ years. These Kayaba and Showa legs - you gotta clean 'em every few seasons. Aluminum oxidation and maybe more prone to moisture(hot and cold) here in the midwest.? by @rickynoot

...as I'm riding on my 1500+ mile trip at sometimes 80+ mph passing semi trailers on Interstate I-90, flying down long canyons around sweeping turns with steep drop-offs...bumpy unimproved roads through Indian reservations...I look down at my spool front wheel and notice a slight "rusty dust" on the hub - just on one side. Not much. You could hardly see it. The light was just right to see it.

Lesson of this story: Always check your wheel bearings. If something looks off, it probably is. Just sayin'.... We all want to be riding for many years to come. by @rickynoot
