Bittersweet evening. Tonight was a Celebration of Life party at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park for our dear friend, Vincent Pastore. Family and friends came together to share stories, sing songs and remember one of the kindest, big-hearted humans that ever walked the face of the Earth. We all miss you, Vin. Thirty nine years ago today, the world lost a special man - my father. One of my fondest memories was, sad to admit this, faking falling asleep in the car just so he would have to pick me up and carry me into the house. The only time I ever felt safe as a child was when I was in his strong, warm, loving arms. With the loss of a good friend just this week, I wish I could experience that now. Miss you, Dad. Tough couple of days. First, it was learning of Vinny’s passing on Saturday. Then the wake yesterday and the funeral Mass this morning. All the tears! All the hugs! Feeling the emptiness in spite of being surrounded by caring, loving, hurting people. Family. Friends. All different and yet all the same. The common denominator? The loss of a kind, generous, caring, humorous, selfless, warm, loving father, grandfather, brother, teacher, friend. Yes, Vinny was all that! And more.

The wake yesterday was, well, kind of bittersweet. So many feeling the loss while sharing stories that both made you cry and others that made you laugh. And again, a common denominator – Vinny, and the way he touched so many people with his unique ability to make everyone feel warm and welcome.

And today, the funeral Mass. Very well attended by those who loved Vinny. A retired Monsignor officiated the ceremony. Vinny’s daughter and nephew spoke. They shared familial stories that only endeared Vinny even deeper into our hearts. Not a dry eye anywhere! Even the Monsignor during his eulogy had a tough time keeping his composure. That was Vinny’s strength. He got inside you. You couldn’t help but let him in. You wanted to feel his love because it made you feel so special, so good.

I could go on and on. But that’s just me being selfish and me foolishly thinking that if I keep sharing my feelings of loss and pain that maybe, just maybe, it will hurt less. How stupid of me. I just want to make sure as many people as I can reach understand just how good of a fellow human we just lost.

I guess the last thing I want to say here is that even with this emptiness created by Vinny leaving this world, I still feel blessed, TRULY blessed, that he touched my life. Thank you, Lord. Thank you for this blessing. But may I ask for one more little blessing? Please make it hurt a little less for me and all those who mourn this beautiful man – Vincent Pastore. Rest peacefully, my dear friend. by @rickzahnactor
