A mere one hour out of the city, and you are in paradise. After having to cancel our planned trip to Port Townsend due to horrendous traffic last weekend, Kate and I spontaneously decided to hit the road early on Sunday, were on the Denny Park trail by 9am, and three hours later, we were five miles in (straight up the mountain) and having lunch at Melakwa Lake by noon. 10 mile hike never felt so good. We live in such a beautiful state. taken in Snoqualmie Pass, Washington by @ricoque2013

In my bio, you will find a link to a CNN breakdown of the bipartisan 21st Century Road to Housing Act, which just became law, without Trump’s signature. It is attempt that federal lawmakers have just made to try and address our national housing crisis. The article discusses what the law addresses, what it does, as well as its limitations. by @ricoque2013

Amazing to be able to witness first hand the awesomeness of the Egypt vs Iran World Cup. Thank you Kate Dean for the great gift! The crowds, the energy, the fancy footwork and teamwork. Another sold out game and incredible Seattle experience.

I was amazed by the transformation of our City as hundreds of thousands of people gathered to celebrate World Cup yesterday, as USA defeated Australia 2-0. It was gratifying to see Seattle’s city center fully activated and embraced by an international audience, public spaces flooded with activity, restaurants and retail spaces full of consumers, placemaking as we all want and hope to see. So great to see people coming together to enjoy and celebrate. taken in Seattle, Washington by @ricoque2013

Amsterdam Day 5: Last day in Amsterdam before headed to the airport. One last walk along the canals, visit the flower market, visit the massive underground bike storage and shop in the Centraal (downtown). Evening in the NDSM, an industrial area turned over to and activated by the local artists community. So sad to have to leave. taken in Amsterdam, Netherlands by @ricoque2013

What was our director like in the 90’s?

Rico’s student journey in the 90’s included meaningful experiences in Mexico, from Tejalpa to the Yucatan Peninsula. He experienced “espacio expansivo” in Central Mexico, a design concept focused on wide, airy, open spaces. “It was my first meaningful experience of cultural space outside of the United States,” says Rico. “It was memorable because they were expansively different public and natural spaces where I felt inspired to explore.”

That inspiration continued in Rico’s education, as he earned his BA in Architecture and Afro-American studies from the Washington University in St. Louis, then his Masters in Architecture from the University of Washington. Before his appointment as OPCD director in 2021, Rico’s notable collaborative projects include the Northwest African American Museum, Climate Pledge Arena, and Midtown Square in the Central District.

I’m looking forward to joining Tsedey Betru from Just Communities for a conversation on Homeownership-Led Development and a City of Seattle pilot focused on helping homeowners add housing while reducing risk and preventing displacement.
This discussion examines how cities can play a more active role in supporting homeowners, sharing development risk, and creating pathways to long-term community stability.
