Art is the highest form of communication. BEST MONDAY OF THE YEAR!! It’s always amazing to me to watch people TRANSFORM when live music gets into them. It’s an INTEGRAL part of real MAS. Thanks to all our Masqueraders for their energy, Crew, Security, Staff, DJ and of course the Band who made this Carnival Monday so memorable! As a Road Man I must say we gih dem performance like we really cyah behave weself. I could write 1000 letters saying that. Ariapita Avenue was an unforgettable jam for me, one I’ll remember forever. Tears came to my eyes under my shades as the band was BUBBLING crossing Synergy stage! In a moment I felt like I was channeling my great Grandfather, Clement Monlouis, the dapper Martinique born Trini musician who had his own Carnival band on a float in the 1920s/1930s ago and his daughter, my Grandmother who sewed the costumes. Craziest part. I NEVER knew this, NEVER….not til Carnival Sunday night THIS YEAR. Now I knew he was a musician, but never knew the Carnival part. Imagine that, nine years after I started this, I now understand why…. Immediate flashbacks to Carnival Monday 1993, the day of my Granny’s funeral and my confused 9 year old self thinking how different Carnival was going to be without her taking us in the North Stand of the Savannah to watch mas (which included all the brass bands) and trying to figure out how to honour her. Later that same year in July, her son, my uncle Peter gave me a Trumpet. And is so the ting start. Fast forward to 2016 in that same savannah recording Sailor’s feet chipping and trying to figure out why all the brass bands had disappeared. The very next year we hit them with it, LIVE BRASS on the road. I tell you WE don’t choose this ting, it chooses US. The Ancestors always guide, walk with and protect us…….if we let them. Big love to my amazing family for endless support. Love you all Special s/o to our sound crew, truck driver and wheel men, we had some close ones this year. SELECTORS LAST NIGHT WAS THE REAL TING! @selectorstrinidad is an event where a creative chooses 20 songs that shaped their being. I was lucky enough to be the featured guest last night. Of course 20 songs is a super challenge, but being in Trinidad, during the carnival season, I chose 20 carnival tunes that shaped my being. So naturally I did a THROWBACK, starting in 1912 working my way forward to the new millennium. Tune list 1. Pauline - The Trinidad Dance Orchestra/Lovey’s String Band (1912) 2. Bastardy - (1920s) 3.
