I had an amazing time this weekend. ❤️ The vibes were there, the Soca was Soca-ing 😂 and I genuinely had a blast.

But something I heard about afterwards, and then saw for myself, has stayed on my mind.

I later learned that a man had been standing in a corner exposing himself in public. Then I saw the video. I also am hearing that the same man assaulted a lady in the fete. 😩

That’s not funny. That’s not “just fete behaviour”, and nobody should have to encounter something like that when they’ve simply come out to enjoy themselves.

Women should be able to go to a fete, dress how they want, wine, have a drink and enjoy themselves without having to worry about inappropriate behaviour from men.

And while we’re talking about boundaries, men, please stop daggering women to Soca. 😭

A woman wining with you does not automatically give you permission to start aggressively thrusting against her. A wine is not automatic consent to whatever you want to do next.

Read the room. Read her body language. Respect her space. And if she moves away from you, let her move away. It really is that simple.

And I want to make something very clear. This isn’t about one event or one organiser.

It’s about all of us, as patrons, taking responsibility for the environment we create when we enter these spaces. Event organisers and security have responsibilities, absolutely, but so do we.

And before anybody gets it twisted 😂, I HAD A BLAST. One person’s behaviour doesn’t define an entire event. You can have an amazing experience and still acknowledge something that wasn’t okay. Both things can be true.

I love Carnival.
I love Soca.
I love fete culture. ❤️

Loving our culture doesn’t mean pretending the problems within it don’t exist. I talk about them because I love it, because I want women to feel safe in these spaces, and because protecting the culture also means holding ourselves accountable for the things that can make people feel unsafe within it.

Talk de tings. ❤️

Respect protects Carnival.

There is a video circulating of a man exposing his penis at a fête, and I think we need to have a serious conversation about why some people feel comfortable behaving this way within our spaces.

Carnival and fête culture can be sensual. We wine. Our costumes can be revealing. Our music can be sexually expressive. None of those things mean that normal boundaries suddenly cease to exist.

Yet our culture has become so heavily sexualised that some people seem to interpret these spaces as places where anything sexual is acceptable.

It isn’t.

A woman shaking her bamsie isn’t an invitation to touch her.

A revealing costume isn’t consent or access to someone’s body.

Two people choosing to wine together doesn’t give everybody else permission to join in.

And sexual expression within our culture does not give somebody permission to expose themselves to people who haven’t consented to seeing it.

We also have to be willing to challenge behaviour from within our own community. Defending our culture does not mean defending individuals who choose to behave badly within it.

If you witness behaviour like this and feel safe to do so, report it to security or organisers and look out for the people around you.

But let’s be clear. The responsibility belongs to the individuals choosing to behave this way.

They do not represent Carnival/fetes or our culture, and their actions should not define the thousands of people who enjoy these spaces while respecting other people’s boundaries.

Our culture is joyful, expressive, sensual, rebellious and free.

That freedom does not erase anybody else’s boundaries.

We should be able to celebrate sensuality within our culture without it being mistaken for permission to sexually harass, expose yourself to or violate somebody else.

Respect protects Carnival. ❤️

CAN MASQUERADERS HAVE THE ROUTE BACK?

I’m joking with the NPCs 😂❤️ but this is something I genuinely think we need to talk about.

The masquerade route is becoming increasingly difficult for bands to move through because spectators are spilling into the road and walking alongside, between and sometimes directly through the bands.

I remember a time when spectators largely watched from the pavements, the band approached, the road opened up and masqueraders actually had space to play mas.

Now, particularly as you get closer to Judging Point, everything can become so compressed that what should be one of the highlights of the parade can become exhausting and overwhelming. Some masqueraders don’t even make it that far.

And this isn’t about excluding spectators spectators are part of Carnival too. ❤️ It’s about protecting enough space for the parade itself to function.

Is rope still enough? Do we need stronger temporary barriers in certain sections? Better stewarding? A properly protected corridor approaching Judging Point?

Because at some point we have to ask: if the masqueraders can’t move freely down the masquerade route… where exactly are they supposed to play mas? 😩

A comment left under my last post really stayed with me.

And it got me thinking about how often, as women, we’re expected to carefully manage somebody else’s reaction even when they’re the person making us uncomfortable.

Be polite. Don’t embarrass him. Don’t make him angry. Let him down gently.

But where is the consideration for our comfort? Our boundaries? Our safety?

Being nice should never be the price we have to pay in the hope of being left alone. 🧡
