Freddie McGregor ft. Naram – Calling Mr Speaker

“Calling Mr Speaker” places Freddie McGregor over Naram’s fresh reconstruction of the riddim from Triston Palma’s “Face The Struggle”, originally produced by Linval Thompson in 1982. Built in Whanganui and mixed to tape, the production remains firmly rooted in the stripped-back Channel One rub-a-dub sound of the early 80s. McGregor recorded his vocal at Big Ship in Kingston in 2022, bringing his familiar authority to a riddim that fits him naturally.

Naram’s version opens up the rhythm before Hard Rubbish Horns take over with the full instrumental cut “Calling All Horns”. “Dubbing All Horns” then closes the four-track 12” with a deeper sound-system mix. A carefully executed second release from Rick Howe’s RICK label, connecting Jamaica, Aotearoa and Melbourne through one heavyweight riddim.

RIP Lieutenant Stitchie 🕊️🇯🇲 (29 SEPT 1965 - 28 SEPT 2026)

One of the great characters and pioneering voices of 80s dancehall, Stitchie came through the sound system scene in Spanish Town before breaking big with ‘Wear Yuh Size’ in 1986 and later becoming one of the first dancehall artists signed to a major US label, joining Atlantic Records in 1988.

In 1997 he left secular dancehall behind for gospel and ministry, beginning a whole new chapter in a remarkable career. Lieutenant Stitchie passed away in Kingston aged 60, following a long period of ill health after suffering a stroke in 2024. He died just one day before his 61st birthday.

Rest easy Stitchie 🙏❤️

Five years after Showcase Vol. 1, Lone Ark and The 18th Parallel return with Showcase Vol. 2 - six deep roots cuts, each followed by its dub. Recorded to 2” tape between Geneva and Roberto’s A-Lone Ark studio in Spain, with Roberto producing, singing, playing bass and guitar, and handling the mixes. Pure analogue roots music, drawing deep from the Jamaican sound of the 70s and 80s.

Melkam Addis Amet! 🇪🇹 Happy Ethiopian New Year!

Celebrating on Riddim Yard today with The Abyssinians and ‘Satta Massagana’ - one of the foundational anthems of roots reggae, sung partly in Amharic and drawing a direct spiritual line between Jamaica and Ethiopia.

‘Satta Massagana’ means roughly ‘give thanks’ - a song that helped put Ethiopia, Amharic and Rastafari consciousness at the heart of roots reggae. Perfect tune for Enkutatash 🇪🇹

Enkutatash means ‘gift of jewels’, traditionally linked to the Queen of Sheba’s return to Ethiopia after her visit to King Solomon in Jerusalem, when she was welcomed home with gifts of jewels. Today it marks the Ethiopian New Year and the beginning of spring 🌼

I received death threats for posting this five years ago. It’s impossible to play Jamaican music without platforming artists who hold homophobic views - but Riddim Yard stands firmly with the LGBTQI community ❤️ by @riddimyard

🔥 WAYNE SMITH - FIRST EVER RECORDING 🔥

Straight out of the King Jammy vaults - ‘Zarro’, a previously unreleased tune from 1980 and the first-ever studio recording by the late, great Wayne Smith.

Wayne was just 15 when he voiced this one at Channel One, five years before he and Jammy would change dancehall forever with ‘Under Me Sleng Teng’.

‘Zarro’ rides the same heavyweight steppers riddim as Lacksley Castell’s ‘What A Great Day’, with the original recording mixed at King Tubby’s. On the flip is another previously unheard cut - a raw drum and bass dub mixed by Jammy himself.

Until now, the tune had only surfaced on rare occasions through King Jammy’s Super Power Soundsystem in Jamaica. Now, 46 years later, it finally gets an official release.

Wayne Smith & Prince Jammy - ‘Zarro’
Out 4 September on VP Records / Greensleeves - 7” vinyl, digital and streaming.

Warlpiri knowledge carried by dub ❤️💛🖤 A unique album that sits comfortably next to the great Jamaican deejays. Not because it imitates them, but because it fulfils the same purpose - using sound to hold culture together.

Crown and Country reminds white Australia that accountability isn’t about guilt. It’s about learning and listening. About making space for Indigenous voices to speak on their own terms.
