If you’ve been thinking about registering for my retreat but haven’t yet, is there anything you’re wondering that I can address? If you have a part that hesitates about being in a group, I can tell you that, in my experience, even those parts relax in a small group with other people who’ve had similar experiences. If a part thinks it might not want to participate in every activity, it doesn’t have to. There is room to say, “I think I’ll sit this one out.” If there’s a part that worries about what might come up—again, in my experience, parts like that relax when they sense Self. And in a group, the collective Self-energy is felt in a powerful way that has a real impact on parts. Reading these again brought tears to my eyes, remembering how participants in the inaugural Not All Parts Get Adopted Retreat engaged in the process and shared with one another. It was a beautiful experience. And now I’m looking forward to bringing together this year’s group and seeing what unfolds. Two of last year’s participants are returning, and that means more to me than I can say. Will you be part of it too? First, it popped into my head: “Not all parts get adopted.” Then it became a workshop at the Internal Family Systems Conference. Then I knew I had to create a workshop specifically for adoptees. I started with half a day. Then I saw it could easily take a whole day. Or even a week. So it became a retreat. First three days. Now three and a half. These things need time. One part leads to another. Before you can look for the parts that didn’t get adopted, you have to check in with the parts that did—the ones that worked hard to stay adopted—and find out if they have concerns about connecting with those others. And honor them for what they did, because they were trying to help you survive. Then you find the parts that don’t identify as adoptees. And you encounter grief. And that deserves to be honored. And finally, you can bring them all together, which is cause for celebration. That’s how this retreat came to be. Hope to see you there. Link in bio. How do 3½ days in the Colorado Rockies while the aspens are changing sound? It’s such an inspiring time to be there — when the sun is lower in the sky and the aspens give everything a golden glow. The second Not All Parts Get Adopted Retreat is happening then, October 6–9. I’ve crafted it to be what I would want if I were a participant: IFS work with my parts. Rituals for letting go and re-emerging. A beautiful setting in nature. Soothing hot springs. A small group of adoptees who get it. The only thing missing is you. I’ve been to a lot of beautiful places in Colorado. But there’s something about Mt. Princeton that does something specific to my nervous system. The mountains. The mineral waters. The air.
