An assembly of stripes! The Gap, Picasso, and Hudson Bay gather in a trio. I like seeing them as a collective because together, the details in pattern variations and construction are more noticeable. One thing I do when working on these patterns is not just duplicate the colors, but also the construction of the original sweater. So for those non-knitters in the room, look at the way the shoulder attaches to the body on the left one contrasted with the other two. The seam angles from the armpit to the collar, where on Picasso, you can easily see the seam is a straight vertical. Yeah. I showed you 1/12 scale Julie, who came along to Guild School. But (apart from knitting) I work mostly in 1/24 scale, so I’m so fortunate that @half.scale.dollhouse was able to reduce the file in size and print it. It’s tricky to paint details in such a small scale, but now I have a version who can try out the dollhouses for me. This was just what I wanted, when I first gravitated toward the @shrunk3d booth in Chicago: a way to gently haunt the miniature rooms I’ve created, in person, via models and photos. (Here shown in the arts and crafts house). And she still really looks like me, in the tinier version! Less detail for sure but it’s funny how much recognition goes along with posture, the set of shoulders, the slope of a head. #halfscaleminiatures #halfinchscale by @ridiculoustinythings

I thought that since I work in 1/24 scale normally, @alexandra299 ‘s class at @igmaguildschool would be a breeze…but school is for learning! And I was in for a real journey, as you’ll see here. But there’s nothing like a struggle to make the end product particularly satisfying. I learned SO MUCH in this class, and feel so lucky to have gotten this experience (as well as lots and lots of tiny paint brushes.) #halfinchscale #igmaguildschool2026 by @ridiculoustinythings

I have just spent the most amazing week learning to make a miniature pop-up book of Alice in Wonderland at @igmaguildschool . The book was brilliantly engineered and taught by @tine_krijnen_ . One of the biggest takeaways was that we cut each page first on multiple dummy copies, before using our real materials. We started with a larger version to understand the cuts, folds, and construction of each individual story spread, and then cut a smaller one, and a smaller one, before finally doing it on our full-color “real” version. It was laborious and meticulous, and the finished book is so delicate I doubt many people will ever see the inside of it…but I will treasure the entire process of learning, in the company of such skilled and creative people. And of course it’s whetted my appetite for more miniature bookmaking, naturally! #miniaturebooks #igmaguildschool #igmaguildschool2026 by @ridiculoustinythings

Tiny skiers! Two weeks ago I got to see selections from the historic clothing collection at Smith College, where this beautiful specimen of vintage knitwear was on display…along with its pattern book, so naturally now I am figuring out the graph for teeny tiny skiers. The colors of the original sweater are a bit crocked, I’ll do the details in a light tan closer to what the historical knitter chose. #miniatureknitting by @ridiculoustinythings

Whoops! One sock is longer than the other. This was me omitting a line from the notes that I wrote to myself, as I made the first sock. That’s ok: I learned exactly what I needed to learn. I’m not going to remake it because also this particularly color of pale pink thread reads more like “dingy” to me, once sock-shaped. But I share this with y’all to yet again illustrate how hard it is to calculate the time that goes into any project. I only made these because I needed to check gauge and measurements of a particular thread, for a particular future pair of socks. It was never about the finished product, on this one…but can I count the hours spent doing this, when I tally the time I spent on the next socks that I will be finishing? #miniknitting #miniatureknitting by @ridiculoustinythings

When I chose these little @dollhousefeliperoyo dolls at the Chicago show, I wasn’t choosing for a specific project. I just wanted the very smallest ones that I could find. I realized this weekend that they’re perfectly sized for my Dutch baby house! The subtle ones have their own challenges. This is Velma Dinkley from Scooby Doo: no stripes or markings to identify it, just a solid color and a particular slouchy shape. This one has a few details I particularly love—the rolled collar, the slight turn in the elbows, the saggy drape. I want each sweater to suggest the story of the full character, using only knit stitches and thread. Velma is the smart one, nearsighted, bespectacled, the brains of the operation who trades on logic and rationality (as opposed to Daphne, “the pretty one”.) How to knit rationality and clumsiness into a sweater whose most remarkable visual feature is its shapelessness???
