Scenes from Grenada’s Soca Monarch 🤩 I promise you, you’ve never experienced anything like this. When I choreograph to soca songs a lot of the time I implement the use of a flag/rag/bandana. I didn’t pull this out my ass 😅 waving flags/rags is a celebration during fetes, particularly during carnival time. It’s how we express our joy and our unity with the music, it’s how we interact with the musicians and performers, it’s how we ramp up the energy within ourselves and throughout the space. The Diaspora Dance pop-up was truly joy in motion. From the islands to the motherland, rhythms crossed oceans and met on one floor. 🌍🎶 Soca🇬🇩, Afrobeats🇳🇬, Bouyon🇩🇲, each sound carrying stories, each step connecting us back. Vibrant in every step. Every twist and turn. Every flag raised.This was community. This was culture, lived, shared, and felt through every movement.
