I’m not a reviewer. I’m a reader!

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately — wondering if I should be posting a review of every book I read, feeling like I need to be more objective as I read, worrying I’m not Giving The People What They Want with in-depth analytical reviews…

But I’m a book enjoyer! A reader! A Bookstagrammer! Not a book critic! (Okay, maybe a book critic sometimes but mostly just a BOOK LOVER (see slide 2) who’s tryna have a good time!)

When I read a thriller, my brain is empty and I’m just tryna be properly surprised instead of analyzing the plot/guessing the ending/etc.

When I read a romance, I’m just trying to buy into the cuteness & hoping it’s believable enough that I don’t get jolted out of the story.

When I read literary fiction, I’m just reading to enjoy the beautiful language & fall in love with some new characters & be in awe of the astuteness and insight.

When I read fantasy, I’m realllly trying to just enter the world & enjoy the magic and creativity without getting confused/bored.

When I read nonfiction, I’m there to learn and hopefully be entertained enough to want to keep reading.

When I read a classic, I’m fighting for my life to understand and appreciate it for whatever’s made it endure as it has.

And EVERY reading experience I have is colored by my mood, the last book I read, the length, my patience, what I’ve already heard about it, and also pure vibes.

Now, I’m definitely a book RECOMMENDER — if I really enjoyed a book, or if I read a book & gave it a good chance & it still totally fell short for me, I’ll say so!

And if I really want you to read something (or add a second opinion if everyone’s raving and I don’t get it) I’ll still let you know with a review here on IG telling you why!

But I’m mostly just a fellow reader & I wanna say:

There’s no shame in ENJOYING whenever possible instead of CRITIQUING :)

🖤 Wild Reverence by Rebecca Ross — the prequel to Divine Rivals, which I loved, and also a very pretty cover
💙 Discontent by Beatriz Serrano — translated literary fiction that wasn’t even on my radar. But this is the passage that sold me on it: “What neither my GP nor my later therapist ever understood was that my stress wasn’t caused by my job, but, as I’d told him, by having to go to work. Spending eight hours a day, Monday through Friday, on an alienating and unfulfilling task. All that time was given to others instead of sitting at home reading or drawing or simply staring at the ceiling, half-naked, observing the cracks.” Yep. by @rightbookatya
