Your vegetables called — they want straw mulch. Here’s why this humble material is one of the hardest workers in your garden:

1. 🌡️ Temperature Buffer
Straw insulates soil, keeping roots cool in summer heat and warm during cold snaps. Your plants stay comfortable so they can focus on growing, not surviving.

2. 💧 Water Retention
A thick layer of straw slows evaporation dramatically — meaning less watering, lower water bills, and more resilience during dry spells. Your soil stays moist where it counts: at the root zone.

3. 🌿 Prevent unwanted plants
Straw blocks light to the soil surface, making it harder for weed seeds to germinate. We don’t stigmatize all weeds, but there is a time an place.

4. 🪱 Soil Biology Builder
As straw breaks down, it feeds fungi, bacteria, and earthworms — the underground crew that makes nutrients available to your plants. You’re not just mulching, you’re feeding an ecosystem.

5. 🛡️ Erosion & Compaction Protection
Rain and foot traffic can compact soil and wash away the good stuff. Straw acts as a cushion, protecting your soil structure and keeping your growing medium loose and alive.

What we have learned:
Use seed-free straw and aim for 2–4 inches thick around (not against) your plant stems.
