FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The public has until Oct. 23 to tell the DEA why they should stop criminalizing psychedelic research that could save lives. SSDP’s new public comment tool makes it easy to make your voice heard! 📢

The FDA moves forward. The DEA moves backward. 🧭

Just one week after a historic FDA public hearing on the future of psychedel*c medicine, the DEA formally published an order to place obscure five tryptam*nes into Schedule I:

🔹 4-0H-D*PT
🔹 5-Me0-AMT
🔹 5-Me0-M*PT
🔹 5-Me0-DET
🔹 D*PT

The DEA’s own record doesn’t make its case:
📉 0 deaths from single-substance exposures across 65 cases over 18 years (2003–2021)
📉 518 law enforcement encounters cited, with no timeframe given
📉 HHS notes the FDA is “not aware of any diversion from research or legitimate manufacturing activities”

The collision: the FDA gave Reunion Neurosciences a Breakthrough Therapy designation for a 4-OH-DiPT candidate to treat postpartum depression. The DEA wants that same compound in Schedule I, legally defined as having “no currently accepted medical use.”

“One foot steps on the gas while the other steps on the brake, and the taxpayers are left to pay for this whole mess.” — Robert Rush, Esq., Rights and Reason Project

Over the past two weeks, Rights & Reason Project and SSDP have filed two requests for hearing with the DEA regarding the scheduling of SR-17018 and tianeptine.

These substances are compounds involved in ongoing scientific and medical investigation and by placing them in Schedule I, the DEA halts that progress.

But, don't take it from just us, experts around the world have stated the unfortunate outcome of controlling substances: reducing innovation, keeping mechanisms unknown, and making research almost impossible.

Let us know if you've experienced research harms by filling out our form: https://secure.everyaction.com/0dcK4x-JhEyFFCdETLH3-g2

We just sent our administrative law challenge to the DEA to not add SR17018 to Schedule I and separate it from the other three substances in the Emergency Scheduling notice. If they won't do that, we request that they allow us to argue this in a formal hearing. This is the first action but will not be the last if they move forward to Schedule SR17018 and end groundbreaking research that will save lives. @ssdpofficial by @rightsandreasonproject

🚨 We have just TWO DAYS to stop the criminalization of SR-17108 🚨

Every story shared reminds us what’s at stake.

People across the country are telling us how SR-17018 has given them hope when other options failed. These aren’t abstract policy debates — they’re real lives, real families, and real futures.

On July 31, the DEA will ban SR-17018, putting promising research and future access at risk — unless we stop them.

If these stories move you, take two minutes to make your voice heard. Send a letter to Congress and urge lawmakers to protect research and oppose this ban.

Together, we can make sure hope isn’t outlawed.

Heading back from the Cannabis Rescheduling Hearing for the 4th of July Holiday. I'll be posting a detailed analysis of the testimony later. One important note -the DEA has moved to emergency schedule 7 OH and SR17018. We will be aggressively fighting the DEA's continuing abuse of the Temporary Scheduling Powers under the CSA. #decriminalize #prohibitionkills taken in DEA Headquarters by @rightsandreasonproject

After our press conference this morning, the DEA would not let me in to watch the hearing. After being told, I was not allowed to observe the hearing (public was supposedly allowed to attend). I was told the hearing is full, despite a generally light turn out, imo, and not many people entering the building. I was told a considerable number of DEA agents took up seats and left after 45 min, leaving an uncrowded room. I was also told that if people left, I still would not be permitted entrance. This is the way the DEA plays. @ssdpofficial #decriminalize taken in DEA Headquarters by @rightsandreasonproject

Cannabis Unity Week brought 44 advocacy organizations, patients, researchers, students, and leaders from across the country to push for meaningful cannabis reform.

It was an honor to speak at the press conference with Representatives Dina Titus (D-NV) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Co-Chairs of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, along with Representative Steve Cohen (D-TN). The event featured an incredible lineup of speakers from Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP), Latino Cannabis Alliance, NORML, DPA, and directly impacted individuals, including survivors of extreme cannabis sentences highlighted through the Stolen Time initiative.

Special thanks to @ssdpofficial and Executive Director Kat Murti for helping build such a diverse coalition united around justice, opportunity, and evidence-based cannabis policy.
