You’ll come across something unlikely for an art gallery in the exhibition 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥. 𝘚𝘦𝘢. 𝘚𝘶𝘨𝘢𝘳. 𝘚𝘢𝘭𝘵.: a circle of soil home to living, breathing plants.

What you’re looking at is Farihah Aliyah Shah’s (@rihah) 𝘈 𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘓𝘶𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦, her third work in the exhibition. As the artist narrates in this video, this installation uses flora to explore how houseplants contribute to our sense of “home,” and how their mobility parallels our own human migrations.

Stop by the Art Museum and smell the flowers. Admission is free and we’re open to the public.

Where else does our image of home first take shape but in the voices of our parents?

In this video, artist Farihah Aliyah Shah (@rihah) discusses two of her three works in 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥. 𝘚𝘦𝘢. 𝘚𝘶𝘨𝘢𝘳. 𝘚𝘢𝘭𝘵. and their basis in discussions with her mother and father. From her mother’s remembrance of Guyanese fruits stems 𝘗𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘺𝘢 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘴, and from her father’s work as a chemical engineer comes a filmic meditation on water titled 𝘈𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘈𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥.
