Meet another member of our 2026 SHIFT Lab cohort…Rilee!

Rilee Corbett is a queer, nonbinary photographer from Los Angeles, CA. Their work is characterized by bold colors and dramatic shadows. These decadent textures emphasize the themes in Rilee’s work: passionate love, pain, and sensuality. Rilee believes that imagery carries the power to inspire an idea or a feeling that comes from deep within a person, on their subconscious levels of awareness. This belief is the most essential part of their image-making process. As an artist, Rilee wants to see, and to be seen. They create art to inspire care and love for one another, as we navigate this world together.

Experiments in the darkroom: toning with an unconventional chemical, Berg's Blue

@tomgugler at @artcenterphoto has been an incredible mentor in sharing his mastery of darkroom processes. One assignment he gives APP2 students is to use uncommon toning solutions to alter black & white prints. Toning increases the archival longevity of darkroom prints.

I find that unconventional photographic processes suit unconventional subjects, like @avajinying. Ava is an inspirational illustrator and storyteller with a unique method of artmaking. Using ink, a pen, a paintbrush, and their breath, Ava creates individualized monsters during in-person sessions.

The last image in the slide shows some other toning methods I experimented with, including Berg's brown/copper toner, and selenium solution. I am especially delighted that this blue "look" can be achieved physically in the darkroom; I am not confined to digital processes as an artist.
