“Most High and glorious God, enlighten the darkness of my heart, and give me true faith, certain hope, and perfect charity, sense and knowledge, Lord, that I may carry out Your holy and true command. Amen.”
— Prayer Before the San Damiano Crucifix

This prayer was first prayed by St. Francis of Assisi before this very crucifix when he heard the voice of Jesus speaking to him. This past year, I have prayed this beautiful prayer after each Mass with my family at Marian University. What a gift it has been to belong to a service and leadership program at Marian that bears the name San Damiano, and to study theology at such a wonderful Franciscan university with replicas of this crucifix in every classroom. What a powerful experience it was today to pray before the original San Damiano Crucifix in Assisi and offer up the intentions of my brothers and sisters in the San Dam program, along with all the other intentions I’m carrying with me throughout this pilgrimage. This spring, I spent the semester studying the lives of St. Francis and St. Clare, reading their own writings as well as those of St. Bonaventure, which reflected on Scripture, Christ’s earthly ministry, and the lives of Francis and Clare, both of whom were completely devoted to following Christ and seeking ever deeper union with Him. Through learning about the humble servant hearts of Francis and Clare and the many graces and miracles they received throughout their lives, I have developed a love for the Franciscan way of life, as well as a deep admiration for these two saints who carried out their ministry in the beautiful town of Assisi. Francis and Clare dedicated their lives completely to loving and serving others as Christ did through humility, contemplation, and evangelization. They remain powerful examples of charity, peace, obedience, wholehearted devotion, and the radiant joy that is found in Christ. Reflecting on their holy and admirable lives and asking for their intercession has strengthened me throughout my own journey this past year, and I’m confident that as I continue my theological studies and grow closer to Christ and my own vocation in ministry, my admiration for them will only deepen. by @riley_q32
