📖 Miss Benson’s Beetle ~ Rachel Joyce 📖

Miss Benson’s Beetle is one of those novels where you need to read through the first few chapters to really get into it. Funnily enough - or maybe not a coincidence at all - that is sort of the story it wants to tell. Two women who have seemingly nothing in common set off on an impossible expedition. Task-minded Margery and frivolous Enid are having a hard time being able to relate to each other, let alone understanding each other’s way of life. But by journeying together through hardships and across the globe, they end up becoming close friends and allies, while the expedition slowly but surely takes on a whole different meaning. And when the women are coming into their own, the book does as well.

💇🏽‍♀️ long hair, short hair, DO care 💇🏽‍♀️

What is just a simple, whimsical style choice for me, can mean that extra bit of confidence for a child to grow more freely.

Hundreds of kids a year lose their hair because of chemo or other (medical) reasons. Haarwensen vzw helps them by giving them real hair for free.

Long hair has been my signature hairdo for more than a while now. So when I felt like it was time for a change, it was an easy decision to wait just that bit longer to have the 30cm that is needed to be able to donate it.

For me... it’s free. For them... it’s a treasure. So do care... and share your hair with @haarwensen ❤️

🐈 Approved: adopt, don’t shop 🐈

Best decision of 2021 so far? Adopting these two furry rascals! 😻 I’m not exaggerating when I say they have done wonders for my mental health, especially during lockdown. They bring me company, comfort & laughter. Even when - or maybe especially when - all is not right in the world, they give me the sense that life can be exactly as it should be, right in this moment with them.

Their start in the world has not been ‘right’ either, though. They had been left alongside the road about one year ago this week. The people who found them, together with their 3 siblings, initially took them in, but had to admit 5 kittens was too much for them after a while. The Ghent animal shelter @dierenasielgent then took them in, but even with all the best care offered there, their living space was scarce. Luckily there are foster families such as Laura & Miel who help the animal shelter by taking in cats before they’re ready to be adopted. A first sense of a home! It was there that we met these two inseparable brothers looking for a final home together.

So while they’re turning 1 somewhere in the coming days, I hope they have found their home with us in these past 6 months, and that I reciprocally have made the world a better place for them again too. 🎂 Happy birthday, Thor & Loki, my favorite hair shedding, luxuriously lounging, fly hunting and very cuddly feline friends! 🎂

As part of our musical theatre course we had the opportunity to partake in two masterclasses with Lieven Debrauwer. He asked us to choose our ‘personal theme song’. Not an easy question, knowing you also had to have the acquired singing level to perform it…

In the end I chose to take up Journey to the Past from the Anastasia film and musical again. This song resonates with me on so many levels: it immediately throws me back to my childhood when my sister and I watched this movie on repeat, there’s that extra layer now of having lost my own mother and being endlessly in search of how to fit that into my life, and there’s the aspect of hopes and wishes of building my own family, one step at a time.

I loved working with Lieven on this song as an intense deep dive and minutely dissecting every detail of the lyrics, music and acting possibilities! ❤️ It was a wonderful first experience of ‘being directed’ when performing a musical song. An endless learning ‘journey’ in itself. 😉

👯‍♀️ Happy International Dance Day 👯‍♂️

Here’s a little snippet of, well, me dancing. It feels like quite a leap posting this, since it is nothing much choreography or dance wise, more like some warming-up stretchy type of impro. This was exactly one month ago when I was sitting on a lot of feelings and I just tried to let them out through music and dance. It is raw emotion put into motion. Because that is what dance can do. It can be an outlet, it can make me feel like me, it can make me feel alive. Now let’s shake it like there’s no tomorrow! 💃🏻 Or check out all the wonderful productions on Podium19 for @dagvandedans 🕺🏽 Also, that empty shelf in the middle? That is were I put my laptop for online dance classes, that is covid-dancing alright! 👟

*A is for Austria*

As a teenager I once went to a water sports summer camp in Schwarzsee of which I mostly remember the other girls, how homesick I felt and… the water sports of course. Besides these mental pictures, I don’t think there are any physical ones that haven’t drowned with me. 💦

But! ☀️ During our 2016 Eurorail trip we visited Vienna and I do have fond memories and pretty pictures of that! We visited the city, both the grand & stately and the young & hip, a handful of museums, had our share of atmospheric food experiences such as in Café Sperl (Before Sunrise, anyone?) and we roamed around Sissi’s grand estate Schönbrunn for a long and sunny day, an experience which provided us with quite some swag, judging from that last picture. 😎🤓😅

📖 Clap When You Land ~ Elizabeth Acevedo 📖

Clap When You Land is about the family ties that bind and the intricacies that come with it. It is about sisterhood in all senses of the word and the privilege your place of birth can withhold. It is about finding your place in the world as a young adult.

Clap When You Land warmed my heart with all of these fierce, kind and complex female characters, building on their relationships with each other, and it read like a train.

“Hey mum, what if you actually turned 60 last week?”
“I would have had 11 more years with you and maybe many more to come. It is a math equation I hardly ever make. I had 49 wonderful years of which 22 with you.”
“I know, I only ever make another math equation as well: how many years I would have left if I only were to live up until 49 years like you.”
“But today was for happier thoughts.”
“Yes. If you turned 60 last week, we would have celebrated. We would have tried our hardest to surprise you and make it as big a celebration as it can be these days. You always went big for our birthdays, it was our special day. I loved those!”
“Me too. But I also loved the simple days.”
“I know. That’s what I admire about you and I wish to ask you about the most. How you could feel so relaxed and at peace in the moment most of the time, how you always trusted things would turn out alright and people had the best intentions? When I think about you I still see you sitting at our kitchen table, looking out over the garden, being in that moment, content. While my mind runs wild a lot of the time and nobody puts more pressure on me than I do myself.”
“I also had confidence in you, that you would find your way, turn out alright.”
“I know you did and that gives me strength. Especially since I also feel like no one has ever known me like you did: the good, the bad, the easy, the hard, all of me in all my complexity. 🎨 Triptych of a Migraine Head 🎨

This is me, having a migraine and mustering everything I have in me to make it to the pharmacist. Except for not having bothered with make up and the slightly drawn eyes, I look okay. Looking like this, I think, is why people often wrongly flick off migraines as a mere headache.

This is me, having a migraine and absolutely not being okay at all. There’s a searing pain above my eyes, a pressure wanting my skull to cave in, a constant nausea and an immense tiredness, all lights irritate me, I can’t concentrate, forget the easiest words and even though I need something in my stomach to protect it while taking in my medicine, I’m having a hard time getting anything in there at all.

This is me, having a migraine and hating how it interrupts my life on a monthly basis in varying degrees depending on how fierce the attack is, hating how migraines still are underestimated and the word gets thrown around lightly when it isn’t applicable, hating how besides the physicality of it all, it is a mental struggle of allowing yourself to rest, enough, frequently, when needed, and not feeling guilty about it, being kind to myself and accepting I’m not up to other tasks in that moment.

This is me, having a migraine and not being okay, but knowing I will be again in a couple of days.

🐋 Approved: a plastic free bathroom with Paper & Boo 🐋

Starting from July the EU will ban certain single-use plastic products such as cutlery, plates, cups, straws, take away food containers and cotton bud sticks.* As far as that last one goes, I’ve been using bamboo ear buds from @paperandboo for a while now and I can fully recommend them! I even like the bamboo sticks better than the plastic ones as they don’t bend that easily and give you more - uhm - ‘swipe power’.

“It is only 1 cotton bud stick.” - 7.5 million people

It is @paperandboo ’s mission to create sustainable, plastic-free bathrooms. They’re a Dutch company, but they also deliver in Belgium, and all products come in completely biodegradable packaging.

Besides their ear buds, I have also fully switched over to their reusable cotton pads. Both softer and more scrub fit ones come together in a small bag, that you can use to easily wash them in your washing machine.

I was positively surprised by the shampoo bar and its foaming quality, but sadly the smell doesn’t really linger. Still, once all my samples and bottles stacked in the closets have been fully used, I might stick to a bar for the ecological advantage all the same. Just like when I need a new toothbrush head for my electrical toothbrush I will most definitely try out their recyclable ones as well.

*This ban is stipulated in article 5 of the the EU Single-use Plastic Directive or Directive (EU) 2019/904. As this article only applies to a specific selection of single use plastic products, we’re obviously not there yet, but it is a great step in the right direction. Even more so as the selection should be based on the plastic products that pollute marine life the most.
