I was told by everyone to grey blend but I refuse to and here’s the reasons why:

1. grey blending services are EXPENSIVE. Like I get it, it’s a highly specialised and skilled service and often involves multiple sessions over months to achieve the results you want.

But my main reason for ditching the dye in the first place was to limit the maintenance and expense of going to the salon every 6-8 weeks.

What’s the point in getting my greys blended if I have to go to the salon just as often. Toners only last so long and those transformation photos won’t look like that in 2-3 weeks time.

Some may say it looks better than a demarcation line and whilst I agree there’s just no easy fixes or shortcuts to growing out your natural colour.

2. Growth is always going to be awkward. It’s a learning process and one hell of a journey. But that doesnt mean the awkward stage lasts!

Nothing worth doing was supposed to be easy. Yes there are days where I hate my hair and want to shave it all off but those are few and far between now. I’m committed to this process and the mindset shift it brings with it

You have to trust the process as they say

3. My hair is already damaged from bleach and dye so why would I put more bleach on it. My hair and scalp is so much healthier from ditching the dye completely so I won’t be going back.

Sharing this for anyone currently looking at their roots and wondering if they should quit šŸ˜…

Some days I love it. Other days I question my life choices as I want to hide my grey roots from the world. Both are valid!

Because truthfully, it was never just about the hair.

Which slide hit the hardest? 🩶

Grey hair makes you look old… or so everyone would believe.

Yet why is it many of us who choose to go grey feel more confident and more like ourselves than ever before?

What’s ageing is a hair colour that no longer suits you anymore. What’s ageing is worrying about your roots showing every few weeks.

Grey hair is just a colour. It doesn’t give away your age at all. You can be 16, 70, 24 or 45 with greys. You could be 35, 60, 42, or 28 with not a single strand of silver.

The age you start greying literally means nothing. It’s mostly based off genetics. So if your parents and grandparents went grey early you likely will too!

Let’s stop shaming women for having natural greys that they can’t help. And let’s start embracing everyone’s shades of different hairs colours from blonde, brunette, ginger, grey or silver 🩶

8 months of saying NO to hair dye.

8 months of getting used to seeing more grey every day.

8 months of slowly worrying less about what other people think about my hair.

8 months of learning to actually like my natural hair.

8 months of no longer feeling like I need to hide my greys.

8 months feels like an awfully long time when you’re in the middle of a grow out, but I’m really loving the progress so far and seeing how far I’ve come every week.

I still have a long way to go but I’m starting to think it might just be worth it. 🩶

238 days of saying NO to hair dye

Almost at the 8 month mark (minus a few days) and it’s honestly getting easier.

I’ve stopped caring about the negative comments online. I don’t notice the stares in person anymore.

I just wander about my day ignoring anyone and everyone.

If someone has a problem with my hair colour then so be it but I’ve stopped trying to explain myself to anyone else. The people who don’t get it will never understand. And the ones that do I already see you and thanks for being here and for all the support 🄰

I’m off to Greece and Turkey at the weekend and looking forward to the sea, sun and sand.

I’ll catch you at the beach next week āœˆļøšŸ–ļø by @rioglowing

232 days of saying no to hair dye.

The more days that pass the easier it gets. I barely even notice my roots anymore until someone else points them out or mentions how I’m growing them out.

If it wasn’t for posting online I wouldn’t give them a second thought now. It’s just become my new normal.

I’m also loving the shorter hair and definitely had ā€˜long hair blindness’! iYKYK

224 days of saying no to hair dye.

Someone said to me today ā€œyour grey roots really suit you.ā€

It caught me off guard because I never would have thought someone would have said that to me months ago when I was deep in regret and wondering if I’d ever feel better about my hair.

Back then I was convinced everyone was looking at my roots and thinking how awful they looked. But it turns out no-one really cares about your roots as much as you think they might.

Don’t get me wrong, I still have days where I look in the mirror and question what I’m doing. This journey definitely isn’t all confidence and empowerment.

But comments like that remind me just how much beauty is linked to personal preference. Some people think I look old. Some people prefer the grey.

The difference now is that I no longer care about the opinions of others so much and just doing whatever I want. Because the only opinion that matters in mine.

I’m making decisions based on what feels right for me.

224 days dye free.

Still going. See you next week 🩶 by @rioglowing

Every late diagnosed autistic woman eventually realises these things….

You spent most of your life pretending to be someone you’re not. Whether that’s watching other people on how to act. Or seeing if others are laughing at a joke before you do.

Or perhaps you just got to the point of burn out and realised you don’t even know who YOU are.

Getting a late diagnosis of autism as a woman doesn’t change any of that. But it does explain why you might have spent decades feeling like you never really fit in anywhere.

How many of them can you relate to? by @rioglowing

Women don’t owe you pretty. Here’s what I mean…

Today I received a comment that said:
ā€œGet it cut PLEASE… it looks horrible.ā€

Why do we feel so entitled to comment on other people’s appearance?

My hair is in an awkward stage. I know that. I’m growing out years of bleach and dye. It’s not supposed to look like I’ve just walked out of the hairdressers.

I know some people think they’re trying to ā€œhelpā€, but no one ever asks what I actually want. Because most unsolicited beauty advice isn’t really about helping.

It’s about encouraging women to fit back into a beauty standard that makes other people feel more comfortable. But why should anyone apart from me care what I look like?

Why should a complete stranger care if I have grey roots? Or frizzy hair. Or wrinkles.

We’ve normalised the idea that women should always be trying to look prettier. Prettier for work. Prettier for social media. Prettier for complete strangers.

I’m just not interested in playing that game anymore.

I don’t owe anyone pretty. I only owe myself the freedom to look the way I want to look and how that makes me feel.

So no, I’m not trying to be pretty for anyone else.
