As your sister, I’ve had the gift of watching you grow, and that has been one of life’s greatest privileges. I don’t take a single moment of it lightly. Having the opportunity to preserve this chapter of your journey made this moment all the more meaningful to me.

I’m so proud of the woman you are and everything this milestone represents. It’s a celebration of your resilience, your growth, and every challenge you’ve overcome along the way.

Congratulations on such a well-earned achievement, Zay. May this be only the first of many dreams realized. I love you, and I’ll always be proud to witness every beautiful chapter of your story. ✨

As we prepare for Coronation and Homecoming Week at Wheatley, I found myself reminiscing about the past and revisiting the tradition of Black girlhood through Debutante Balls.

These formal events, which date back to 18th-century Europe, were originally meant to introduce young women of elite families into society. Over time, Black communities redefined the tradition, using debutante balls to celebrate cultural pride, social progress, and the accomplishments of young Black women.

Today, these events continue to be meaningful cultural celebrations, offering young women opportunities for mentorship, growth, and connection while honoring our heritage.

How can we honor the past while creating new traditions that empower the next generation to shine even brighter?

THE HEROINE SHOT
As a storyteller, I see motherhood as the ultimate chapter in a woman’s journey — a profound, life-altering transformation. Capturing Stephanie at this powerful moment, standing on the cusp of womanhood and motherhood, is a reminder of how beautiful and resilient we are as we embrace new beginnings. Watching Stephanie step into this new chapter fills me with joy — she is becoming, growing, evolving with every breath, like the waves behind her, steady and unstoppable.

@s_______a_______f and @freddyfranco_, congratulations on this incredible new journey. Your love and compassion for one another radiate, and I have no doubt you will continue to be the most nurturing and loving parents to Aliyah. I’m honored to be a part of this chapter and watch it unfold in real time.

Love y’all. šŸ’›

PARTY HALLS
Gele. Aso-oke. Stacks of dollar bills. Heineken bottles and soda pops off in the distance. The aroma of smoky jollof rice, sweet plantains, and an array of meats fills the air, but there’s always a longer line for designer or egusi soup with pounded yam. The speakers blast either Michael Jackson’s ā€œWanna Be Startin’ Somethinā€™ā€ or a beloved Nigerian classic. When it was time to ā€œsprayā€ the celebrant with money, my cousins and I would be tasked by our aunties to gather the cash, stuffing crumpled dollar bills into a trash bag. The air was thick with the scent of heavy perfumes, smoky food, and infectious laughter. And heaven help you if you didn’t greet every aunty or uncle—there’d be consequences.

These memories of party halls embody the essence of the high life—a vibrant, joyous celebration of culture, family, and togetherness. They remind me of home and inspire a deep sense of nostalgia for the warmth and love of those gatherings, where tradition and community were always at the heart of every celebration.

Featuring artist and DJ @xchi.spiritx—thank you for creating with me and making space for this story. šŸ’›āœØ

I am thrilled to announce that I am now part of Houston ISD’s Fine Arts Department as the Theatre Director at Wheatley High School in the Fifth Ward. Little Faidat couldn’t be prouder, as it’s truly come full circle—from being a Speech and Drama kid in middle and high school to competing in school festivals and UIL tournaments.

Having been immersed in the Fine Arts world since childhood, I am thrilled to pass the torch and make an impact by creating an innovative and forward-thinking program that aligns with today’s ever-evolving world. My goal is to help my students develop collaboration, communication, filmmaking, and marketing skills while understanding their unique creative aspirations. Hi, @tiktok šŸ“±

In conversations with Principal Sabrina Cuby-King and Assistant Principal Arlice Young—both incredible women—we discussed developing a forward-thinking approach that exposes our theatre students to diverse, community-focused real-world experiences as they happen.

Representation in underrepresented communities is a personal mission of mine. I’m committed to ensuring our students see themselves in the diverse opportunities around them. It’s crucial for them to recognize their potential in both creative and non-creative fields.

Don’t be surprised if you receive an email about a creative panel in our auditorium! I believe it’s important for the youth to see the potential of creative entrepreneurship with heroes like yourself.

And yes, ā€œSo Goodā€ by Destiny’s Child was the song we lip-synced to that landed our girl group in 3rd place. šŸ„‰

This summer was a series of tests, but I sought to heal parts of myself through a collaborative body of work that felt like a cleansing experience. Social media can be intimidating and isolating, but this journey helped me find my voice and reconnect with my passion for storytelling.

I’m eternally grateful to my family of creative souls who embraced this idea four years ago without hesitation. You’ve healed me in countless ways, offering a safe and open space to connect, create, and collaborate. šŸ«¶šŸ½

Thank you to my incredible collaborators:
