When I decided to go to college I was in a really bad place and I didn’t know what I wanted out of life (I still don’t). But when I started, it gave me something that was mine and mine alone. It was something that challenged me to get my affairs in order and question what I was even doing with my life. I didn’t realize how healed I would feel after this graduation. I never walked my high school graduation, I didn’t even really think I would ever go to college. I moved away from Oregon at 16 because I was not often accepted in a rural environment, and when I came to Los Angeles I fell in love. I fell in love not only with the people, but with what each dynamic could teach me. Simultaneously, I met a lot of people who I didn’t agree with but who I still hold love and compassion for from a distance. I have met a second family of trans girls who I have the utmost respect and affection for and who constantly teach me things about myself and the world which I would have never acknowledged without them. But I’d be lying if I said it was easy. I miss my family. I miss my hometown friends. I have missed countless family events, sibling graduations and birthdays, and I haven’t been there for a majority of my little brother’s teenage life. I even miss the rain, if you can believe it. But I would do it all again, I would cry out to the universe and ask why I often felt so outside of my own body and my own life a million times over to prove to myself that I am not someone to be underestimated. Regardless of my complaints, I am so ridiculously privileged to have the opportunity to educate myself, to be in a safe place, and to build a community away from my rural roots. Thank you everyone who helped me get here, many of whom are included in this slide. Many are not mentioned and likely would prefer to stay unmentioned. But to them, to those who point, whisper, and ruminate in the audience as I was walk with grace for my diploma, to them I say: Thank you! Thank you for the memories, the laughter, and the love. Everyone who I have ever come into contact with throughout these last few years has truly changed my life for the better and I wouldn’t change a thing. Anyway… next! by @rippkai
