“A fish of a thousand casts” Fajar told me. But as the hours stretched into days, it felt more like ten thousand.

I cast deep between tangled vines, my fly landing with a splash in a narrow pocket of water. The jungle was still, the only sounds the hum of insects and the occasional rustling of leaves. Then, out of nowhere, shattering the silence, a massive Red Kaloi erupted from the water, devouring my fly with a tremendous splash.

This one would not get away. It ran hard, stripping line as we maneuvered the boat away from the submerged maze of logs. But these fish are smart. He charged toward a sunken tree…we moved faster. He dove deep under the boat. I braced, my rod bending dangerously, my arm aching with the effort. I was to my leader. We were either landing this fish or breaking my rod.

I turned the Kaloi just in time, guiding him toward the net.

I exhaled, hands trembling, heart pounding.

The second woman to land a Red Kaloi on the fly.

Turns out grief and happiness can exist in the same place.
Grief has a way of making everything you love feel far away for a while. I found a little piece of myself again. taken in Littleton, Colorado by @ripsie14
