Matthew 18:15–17 doesn’t tell us to simply forgive in silence and pretend nothing happened. Jesus commands confrontation and gives a process for dealing with someone who refuses to listen.
God cares about the heart of the person who was wronged AND the heart of the person who did the wrong.
We should preach forgiveness.
But we should also preach repentance.
We should preach mercy.
But we should also preach accountability.
We should warn against bitterness and resentment.
But we should also call offenders to confess, repent, and seek reconciliation.
Forgiveness does not erase the offender’s responsibility before God.
The person who was wronged is responsible for their response to the offense. The person who committed the offense is responsible for their response to what they did.
That’s not two different messages. That’s the same God speaking.
