Chapter 1: The Beginning

We met just 3 weeks before lockdown.

Two near strangers who ended up isolating together, and somewhere between doing laps of Brockwell Park, taking up yoga, and binging Line of Duty, we fell in love with each other, and with coffee, in equal measure.

RISE was our first baby, long before our real one came along. It started as an idea between two people with a shared obsession for a better cup of coffee at home, and it grew into something we never expected to still be building years later, alongside a wonderful family, an energetic dog called Molly, and a lot less sleep than we used to have.

This business has never just been about coffee. It’s about the two of us, figuring out what we want to build, and why. Follow along to see where our business takes us next.

Chapter 2: The Reason

When lockdown hit, we found ourselves sitting outside our flat watching deliveries come and go. Alice turned to me and said “Wouldn’t it be amazing to have someone deliver a proper coffee to our door, right now” and the idea started then.

We went on the hunt for better coffee at home, but found supermarket coffee stale and uninspiring and the world of online roasters overwhelming. Once we had the idea for a coffee subscription club, we couldn’t shake it, and 6 weeks later we launched.

A year or so after launch we planned a trip to Western Uganda to meet the smallholder farmers and communities behind the coffee we were selling. Seeing their livelihoods for the first time was a life changing experience for so many reasons. Once we got home and we got to work changing the way we ran RISE.

We became B Corp certified (which was seriously hard work) and we started our Friendly Coffee Fund, giving 1% of everything we sell, not just profit, straight to the communities we met that day. We feel so lucky to do what we do, and absolutely love those we work with. Follow along to see their stories, and ours, unfold.

Chapter 3: The Work

Thankfully, we’ve never run this business from behind a screen.

We travel the length and breadth of the country to find the best coffee roasters to work with, sitting in their roasteries, hearing their stories, and tasting more coffee than either of us can count.

Every box we send is a handful of specialty coffees from independent UK roasters, curated by us, because we still believe people deserve a real alternative to whatever’s sitting on a supermarket shelf.

That’s the actual job. Finding the coffee worth discovering, and the people worth backing to make it.

We absolutely love our community and love hearing from you. Follow along to be a part of our journey and share your brew skills.

NEW MONTH. NEW COFFEE 💞

WELCOME TO @liftcoffeelondon ☕

Our first time working with LIFT, and we’re so excited to have them. They started as a café in 2019 showcasing independent roasters (sound familiar? 👀) before building their own roastery, with a focus on coffee that tastes like where it’s from.

This one means a lot to us: Poás Volcano is where I proposed to Alice in 2025 💍 Grown by seventh-generation producer Alejo Castro Kahle at 1,500–2,000 masl, with the volcanic soil giving real mineral depth. Multiple Cup of Excellence recognitions, too.

WELCOME TO @riseandgrindroastery

We met Sam at Glasgow Coffee Festival and loved his passion instantly. He spent time living with farmers in Colombia to learn coffee from the ground up, and now his small-batch Scottish roastery is a Roast Hero 2025 Glasgow Roasting Championship and Great Taste Award winner 🏆

An 86+ scoring washed coffee from smallholders in San Sebastián, on farms of around one hectare in volcanic-ash soil at 1,700–2,000 masl. It’s sourced through Cofinet, who work directly with the farmers.

We went to visit @liftcoffeelondon in Notting hill Gate and came away even more excited about this month’s coffee ☕️

Volcancito, Costa Rica🇨🇷 is our first coffee with LIFT, and it’s a
really special one. We’re so excited!

Grown by seventh generation producer Alejo Castro Kahle in Costa Rica’s Central Valley, this washed coffee comes from volcanic soil and brings notes of chocolate, red fruits, and almond.

But there’s another reason this coffee means so much to us: Paos Volcanico is where I proposed to Alice in 2025 ❤️

We’re really looking forward to sharing this coffee with you. Try it and let us know your thoughts!

When Alice and Ben visited coffee farming communities in March 2023, they found that many farmers couldn’t afford to send their kids to school, even though it costs just £6 a term on average.

So we started the Friendly Coffee Fund. 1% of every single sale (revenue, not just profit) goes back to coffee-growing communities, funding school places, books and equipment for the children of coffee farmers.

Together, we’re now supporting over 100 children in full-time education.

Huge thanks to our partners at Agri Evolve and our amazing team on the ground, who make sure the funds reach the families who need them most.

And the biggest thank you goes to YOU. Every cup you drink helps make this possible. We started this with just 200 subscribers because we didn’t want to wait until we were big enough to care.

This advent calendar shouldn’t exist.

In 2023 we both quit our jobs to do RISE properly. No safety net, no plan B. Just a lot of coffee and a reckless amount of self-belief.

Our first calendar flopped. We’d bitten off way more than we could chew.

But we still had faith, so we focused on two things:

1️⃣ Finding a designer who could make 24 little windows look like something you’d want on your kitchen counter.

2️⃣ Begging John Lewis for a meeting. We didn’t expect a yes. We got one.

The meeting went brilliantly. A few commercials still had to land (we’ll spare you the spreadsheets), but we were close.

Then the timing got dramatic. I was on the phone negotiating the final terms to get us stocked… while in labour.

Just 12 hours later, Ben and I welcomed our baby into the world!

The deal worked. The calendar worked. Every year since, more of you have counted down to Christmas with us: 24 specialty coffees, one door at a time, made by two people, one of whom apparently negotiates best mid-contraction.

A few weeks later…

Honestly, this year is our best yet. Tap the link in bio to get yours.
