🚨NEW EPISODE🚨 Today on The Heavy Desert Podcast, I welcome Rob Edwards and Wigg Grant of the band Risperidrone to discuss the journey behind their crushing new, debut full-length album, Black Shuck. The band dives into their influences, songwriting process, surviving the COVID era, building songs from years-old riff ideas, and the thriving Welsh doom and stoner scene. They also reflect on their album release show, which raised money for the mental health charity Mind, a recent festival appearance at the inaugural Origins Festival, and what’s next for one of Wales’ heaviest underground acts. Throwback to the blistering heat back in Aug,
then catching @goatmajorband performing a solid set and some new tunes off their upcoming album
‘Death Comes Twice’, by @risperidrone

40MAG- ‘Black Shuck’ LP, locking down a 24-channel Audient console in South Wales. Throwing a pair of Neumann KM184s on the drum overheads, stuffed an AKG D112 into the kick, and let a TLM 102 pick up the live room clatter to keep the beat sounding like wood hitting concrete instead of quantised samples.”

Behind recording the drums , the article has covered the essentials with drum tracking, we set this up 3 times recording 3 tracks per day and 4 on the last day for the album. Most of the kit was captured by Neumanns and the room mic was my secret weapon for getting the drums sounding big and old-school. I soon thought the overheads were pretty high, but again I wanted an overall live room recording sound, rather than a tighter mic’d kit. However, the Snare, kick and toms were heavily eq’d and squashed with compression / adding SoundToys decapitator (I might share behind the scenes of mixing soon too.) and so bringing a blend of the huge live room sound + some modern techniques, I got the desired result for capturing the drums.

Oh and in our track ‘Dirge’ , when tracking the drums,
I told Tom to stay silent when the intro was playing..
The fucker shouts ‘Silence! ‘ and so you can hear it left in, embedded into the intro of the track Dirge.
