For me, it’s about capturing something deeper….
sensuality, mystery, and emotion.

The small details, character, and personality are what I pay attention to.

This is the level of care I bring into every portrait that I create.

I’m currently opening a few commission spots for this coming month.

If you’ve ever wanted a portrait of yourself or someone meaningful to you, I’d love to be the one who creates it.

DM me to get started. #commisionsopen #portraitartist #drawing #realportraits #humanportraits by @rita.foster

I sure enjoyed creating these. Each one took me almost 20 hours and are 11x14”. What a great way to spend May! I had the perfect view of hummingbirds coming up to my balcony the entire time. Please enjoy the progression videos I’ve attached. #petportrait by @rita.foster

I’ve been working on these memorial commissions for a few weeks. I used my faber castell color pastel pencil set and had so much fun getting more familiar with them. Sometimes I forget just how much I love drawing animals because I only get to a few times per year. #petportrait by @rita.foster

This is Jet, a German Shepherd I drew a memorial portrait of early last year. It’s a larger size 16x20”. I love to draw so many subjects and it’s hard to focus on just one, though I know to some it is more ideal and clear cut. I just like to create from life. All aspects, the emotional, the dark, the light, the human, and the wild. #dogportraitsofinstagram #petart #germanshephard by @rita.foster

So many places and new phases. Everything ends then things begin. It’s a constant cycle and I can appreciate it now. There’s nothing more beautiful than knowing how simple things can be…then peace happens. The phenomenon that less effort brings more. Letting go and easing into every single little thing. Knowing that these moments, though imperfect, yearn to be fully noticed and absorbed because they are fleeting. All of it is. This is me. Not perfect but giving my all. #artistsway by @rita.foster

When I lived in a place called Grass Valley in California I’d visit the annual spring garden tour where locals grew and tended to beautiful gardens on their properties. I have so many photos of flowers from years gone and these foxgloves I drew are from one of those photos. I miss those days… I felt some really special energies during that time, ones I know I’ll revisit again one of these days. #foxgloves #flowers #flowerdrawingssketches #flowerart by @rita.foster

I’ve been editing video for a few days now. 5 different drawings I’ve done recently and wanting to make longer YouTube videos of them. It’s work I’m not really used to yet but I’m learning because I want to share how I create and hope it resonates with people. I really like making drawings with intricate details like this, though they take me quite a while to finish! This picture of a gothic castle was finally finished after 60 hours split up through the year because.. you know… life happens. This is a short I made and still working on the longer one. Will update you when finished. #myprocess #wip #gothicarchitecture #castle by @rita.foster

In 2015 my mother and I went into this tiny art gallery in an underground mall . We flew to Minnesota from California together and one week later the Mayo Clinic diagnosed her with Parkinson’s. Though we were on this trip for something pretty serious, we had a lot of fun together and it was a pretty memorable trip. The Mayo Clinic was huge! When we came across the tiny gallery I was admiring a large painting of two lions fighting and didn’t notice my mom talking to the gallery owner to show him some of my art. She was very proud of my work and had a deep appreciation for the arts. Being the daughter of a painter she had been surrounded by creative energy throughout her childhood. As she spoke with the gallery owner he expressed to me how skillful he thought my work was and suggested that if I could find a way to display my charcoal art without glass in front of it, that would be the ultimate. When we arrived back home I had two things on my mind. 1. How can I pull off his idea and 2. My mom was in for the fight of her life with this diagnosis. So I chose this subject to draw with her in mind, the fighter within. I then created my first drawing on wood by painting pastel primer and then finishing off with a glossy varnish spray. This one’s for you mom, you definitely fought hard. 🌹 #handsdrawing #artonwoodpanel #charcoaldrawing #artcollectors #fighter by @rita.foster
