I’ve been diving in the same reef every year, and I’ve witnessed how much it has changed over time. I still remember when it was vibrant, filled with colorful corals swaying with life, schools of fish moving in harmony, and an underwater world that felt alive in every direction. Each dive felt magical, like entering a living masterpiece painted by nature itself.

But now, every time I return, I notice more emptiness. The once bright and thriving reef has slowly turned pale and fragile. Some corals are broken, others are bleached, and the fish that once filled the area seem fewer and quieter. It hurts to see something so beautiful slowly fading before our eyes. The ocean that once gave so much life now silently shows signs of suffering.

As a freediver, this reminds me that the ocean is not just a place for adventure or escape. It is a living ecosystem that needs protection. Every dive should teach us respect. We are only visitors in their world, and we have the responsibility to leave it unharmed.

As ocean lovers, we are called not only to admire the beauty beneath the surface, but also to become voices for its preservation. Loving the ocean means caring about what happens to it even after we leave the water. It means being mindful of pollution, climate change, destructive human activities, and the small choices we make every day that affect marine life.

And as humans, perhaps the greatest lesson is this: nature is not limitless. The beauty we take for granted today may disappear tomorrow if we continue to neglect it. Coral reefs are among the most delicate and important ecosystems on Earth, yet they are dying silently while many people remain unaware. Their decline reflects our own actions and reminds us that everything in nature is connected.

Seeing the reef change year after year is heartbreaking, but it also awakens a deeper sense of responsibility. Maybe the lesson is not only to mourn what is being lost, but to act while there is still something left to save. Because future generations deserve to witness the same vibrant oceans we once did, not just hear stories about them.

An Open Letter for the Protection and Rehabilitation of Napaling Reef

This is not the time to blame anyone. The strong storm that hit last year, together with climate change and rising ocean temperatures, has greatly affected our marine ecosystems. While we cannot control these natural events, we can still choose how we respond to them.

With the possible threat of a strong El Niño this year, I hope we can take proactive and sustainable action to help protect and rehabilitate Napaling Reef before environmental stress worsens further.

Rather than implementing a total and permanent closure that could greatly affect tourism workers and local livelihoods, I hope we can consider more sustainable solutions such as temporary or rotational closures, similar to practices implemented in Siquijor during fish spawning and coral recovery periods.

At the same time, stricter carrying-capacity regulations, responsible tourism practices, environmental briefings, and protected sanctuary zones may help reduce stress on the reef while still allowing tourism and local communities to thrive together.

Since environmental fees are already being collected from visitors, I also hope that a portion of these funds may continue to support coral restoration, reef monitoring, marine protection, waste management, and sustainable livelihood opportunities for local residents.

The goal is not to stop tourism, but to create a more sustainable and responsible tourism model that protects the reef while ensuring that future generations can continue to benefit from the ocean’s resources.

Napaling Reef is more than just a tourist destination. It is a living ecosystem, a source of livelihood, and part of the natural heritage of Panglao that deserves protection, cooperation, and collective action before it is too late.

Respectfully,
