"Above all, don't lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love."

I've been reading this in bits over the course of a few months, but it really has been giving me so much to ponder over. This quote in particular stuck with me. As I've been journaling more and getting to know myself, I've started to realise the littles ways in which I have been dishonest with myself and how detrimental they have been to my growth - if I'm lying to myself how can I expect my relationship with myself and those around me to improve? How can I expect unconditional love if I'm not giving that to myself? It may seem harmless in the moment but it all builds up into an avalanche that will eventually crumble down.

"The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for."

I've been a lot more intentional with the type of media and content I consume lately, and it's been rewarding to me. Consumption doesn't feel overwhelming anymore, and things I read or watch stay in my mind longer. I don't forget it just as quickly as I watched/listened to it. So here's a few words that stuck with me lately (and will probably continue to do so).

I've been slower with my reading the past 2 years but mainly because the need to perform has left me. In a way I realised that I felt like I needed to hit a target to be qualified as a reader, and this year I had to unlearn that. I limited my reading to my 3 person book club and anything I truly felt the urge to pick up and I'm loving it. This months book is East of Eden and I can't wait to finish this with my friends. There's something so profound and comforting when I pick up classic lit, and already I can tell I'm going to love this one!

I've struggled to find the right words to express just how much I loved this book. I didn’t want to write yet another review that repeats what’s already been said, but I truly have to acknowledge Rooney’s remarkable ability to capture the human condition and our imperfect tendencies in such an unflinchingly realistic way.

I resonate deeply with Rooney’s work because of how profoundly she explores the psychology of human behaviour. She has a way of showing how even our good deeds can carry selfish motives or how we unintentionally hurt the people we love despite our best intentions. What sets her apart is that she doesn’t pass judgment—her stories simply are. Humans often dislike flawed characters, perhaps because we read to escape, not to confront ourselves. But if you’re looking for a book that holds up a mirror, revealing parts of yourself—flaws and all—I highly recommend Intermezzo.

This book delves into the nuanced dynamics between two brothers and their respective partners, tackling themes like love, polyamory, age-gap relationships, and miscommunication. Rooney’s belief in the fundamental importance of relationships to human identity resonates with me deeply, and this novel beautifully illustrates how our connections shape who we are. I loved how each character wrestled with their identity and the search for meaning—it served as a poignant reminder that age is never the factor when it comes to trying to understand our purpose and calling on earth.

I buddy read this with @gentlemoonpages and having her to talk to made this book even more memorable. Our multiple 5 minute voice notes kept me sane through the experience ♥️
