Neutral is that which doesn’t stand out to the eye - hugely dependent on context and our perception of colour.

Deep, grounding, earthy tones are rich and layered, and can do the work of neutrals with a dose of vibrance. Think terracotta, forest green, deep aubergine and plum.

Soft, powdery, washed up shades like butter yellow can be easily swapped for white or beige and bring an unexpected freshness with it.

Remember, it’s all relative. When paired with a bright red shirt, the pants in photo 4 all work as grounding tones, and feel neutral.
