RITSCH SISTERS — ‘Sound of an Egg Peeling’

In Sound of an Egg Peeling, Anna and Maria Ritsch turn the simple act of peeling an egg into an intimate exploration of touch, vulnerability and exposure. The egg — fragile yet protective, closed yet full of potential — becomes a metaphor for the layers between what we reveal and what we conceal.

The video installation work, accompanied by a physical installation, invites the viewer to experience this everyday gesture through sound, touch and image.

Exhibited at VASTO as part of ‘I Find Them Really Pleasant to Hold’ solo exhibition.

‘Take your time’
This work extends into the garden as a sound installation.
We brought together bird recordings from New York, Vienna, and our hometown, mixed with simple piano tones.
We were interested in how these different voices could meet in one place, and exist alongside the local birds.
Something shifts when sounds are displaced like that.
Not fully belonging, but not separate either.
Birds are said to develop accents, a small change that happens through proximity.
Inside, the aluminium structures hold the photographs. Not fixed to the wall, but resting, leaning, slightly suspended.
Together they form a system that can be rearranged, where relationships between the works constantly shift, much like encounters between people, places, and experiences.

‘Sound of an Egg Peeling’

The installation is built around a very simple action.
The floor covered with eggs.
On screen: our hands peeling one, slowly. Our eyes, very close.
It’s a small gesture, but it holds a lot.
Something fragile, held for a moment, then opened.
The egg appears in our work as a recurring motif — carrying ideas of fragility, transformation, and intimacy.
Peeling became a way for us to think about layers.
About what is revealed, what remains hidden.
A surface that protects, but also allows contact.
That tension between closeness and distance keeps coming back.

Villa Clea Residency, June 2024

From April 13th–19th, 2026, Villa Clea is open by appointment, showing works by artists who have been in residence since it began.

We’re sharing some moments from our time there.

During the residency, we showed works from our series ‘Together Apart’, a project rooted in our own relationship: closeness and distance, contact and separation. For the show at Villa Clea, we added ‘Spaces of Intimacy’ to the title. The setting asked for it. We lived there, slept there, made and showed work there, all in the same rooms. The idea of skin kept returning to us: something that both separates and connects.

We kept noticing how the works only really settle in relation to each other, not fixed, but shifting depending on where you stand, how you move through the space.

‘Full moon she thought’ was installed in the bedroom. A face between sleeping and waking.
That in-between state felt very close to how we experienced the house itself.
