Today (and everyday), we honor the incredible Black mothers who anchor our world. We are celebrating you in every capacity—from our Mommies and Gramms’ to our Aunties and Iyaloshas. Your love and leadership are the heartbeat of our community.

We recognize that this day can hold many emotions. We take this time to honor those who are grieving their mothers, whether through their passing, through a harm filled relationship, or through their absence.

We also wrap our arms around our new moms navigating this journey for the first time.

The Black matriarchal society is vital to our collective advancement. It is through the strength, wisdom, and care of Black women that we sustain Black Health and find our deepest Joy. Thank you for being the foundation upon which we rise.

Happy Mother’s Day to all.

As we sit in quiet observance at the end of Black History Month, Black Women’s Health Collective looks to the meaning of celebrating our collective and individual Black Futures.

For us, this also signifies the importance of the lives and wellbeing of Black girls.

We honor the paths that we walk that are offerings of legacy keeping for Black girls yet to be born and Black girls living and breathing right now.

We love the Black girls that grew up, the Black girls who are now ancestors, and those who are honoring their Black girlhood by doing inner child work. We see and are grateful to all those Black girls who grew up feeling like they don’t belong in their bodies. Keep living your truth.

In this through line of Black girlhood we recognize that music is an expression of love, intention, and sound.

Black girls thrive surrounded by music. Living, loving and learning.

Check in on what music the young girl’s in your lives are listening to, practicing, and attuned to.

And if YOU haven’t already…consider discovering what magic you can create with a new instrument or one you need to pick up again.

The music on this post comes from child prodigy and cultural ancestor, Hazel Scott.

Hazel Dorothy Scott was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad on June 11, 1920. She was the only child of R. Thomas Scott, a West African scholar from England, and Alma Long Scott, a classically trained pianist and saxophonist. Scott displayed her talents for music at an early age and, by the age of three, Scott could play the piano by ear. When her mother’s music students would hit a wrong note, Scott would yelp with displeasure.

On this day. You can’t see my shadow.
Illusion tells us that the coldest days remain.

Auntie Iyanla writes me that eye reap a good harvest from the soil of my mind…

So eye must sew the seeds of warmth and revolution. Of joy in the midst of sorrow. As long as eye keep my head to the sky. by @ritualofplay

To truly honor the path to Black liberation this 4th of July, it’s essential to dive deeper than the surface. This means taking time to learn, read, and watch stories that explore the full picture of our history and the ongoing fight for justice. Understanding the past helps us reconcile our present and strategize together for our future.

Black Women’s Health Collective has put together a ‘Book & Look’ list of some great books and documentaries we recommend.

Let us know in the comments if you’ve checked these out, or if you have other suggestions!

📚Books to Explore:

“The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story” by Nikole Hannah-Jones (and The New York Times Magazine): A powerful re-examination of American history, centering the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans.

“We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance” by Kellie Carter Jackson: A call to action and a deep dive into the philosophy of Black liberation.

“Medgar and Myrlie: A Love Story and the Civil Rights Movement” by Joy-Ann Reid: Explores the lives and enduring legacy of civil rights activists Medgar and Myrlie Evers.

🎥Documentaries to Watch:

“Judas and the Black Messiah” (Directed by Shaka King): A biographical drama about the betrayal of Fred Hampton, chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party, by an FBI informant.

“Eyes on the Prize” (Directed by Henry Hampton): A monumental and comprehensive documentary series on the American Civil Rights Movement from 1954 to 1985.

“Amend: The Fight for America” (Hosted by Will Smith, Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, Kenny Leon, Jamila Wignot, Raoul Peck, Peter Kunhardt, and Andre Gaines): A powerful series exploring the 14th Amendment and the struggle for equal rights in America.

Let’s use this time to reflect, learn, and commit to the ongoing work of liberation.

Happy Pride!!!!

At Black Women’s Health Collective, we believe in honoring all our ancestors whose shoulders we stand on. Today, we uplift and salute the incredible strength, brilliance, and resilience of our Black LGBTQIA+ ancestors who paved the way for liberation, justice, and self-expression. Their contributions often went unacknowledged or were actively erased, but their legacies continue to inspire and empower us.

Here are a few visionary ancestors you may know, whose lives and work remind us of the power found at the intersections of identity:

Ancestor Barbara Jordan was a lawyer, educator, and politician.

Ancestor Bayard Rustin was a political activist and prominent leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, nonviolence, and gay rights.

Ancestor Willmer M. “Little Axe” Broadnax was a Trans hard gospel quartet singer during the golden age of traditional Black gospel. His most common nickname was “Little Axe,” due to both his small stature and his brother William “Big Axe” Broadnax, who was a popular baritone.

Ancestor Sweet Evening Breeze also known as Miss Sweets or Sweets, was a Black drag queen, activist, healthcare worker, and socialite.
