The Java InterruptedException Flag Clearing Trap

Calling .interrupt() on a thread executing a blocking operation (Thread.sleep(), wait(), join()) triggers an InterruptedException. Crucially, the JVM clears the interrupted status flag back to false before entering the catch block.

A empty catch block effectively wipes the shutdown signal, causing status-checking loops like while (!isInterrupted()) to execute forever. To preserve the interrupt signal across your application stack, re-interrupt the current thread immediately upon catching the exception.

Java Collections Framework — explained visually

List, Set, Queue, Map… but which one should you actually use?

I created this Java Collections cheat sheet covering:

🔹 List, Set, Queue & Deque
🔹 Map & HashMap Internals
🔹 ConcurrentHashMap
🔹 LinkedHashMap & TreeMap
🔹 WeakHashMap & IdentityHashMap
🔹 PriorityQueue
🔹 Concurrent Collections
🔹 Iterator
🔹 Fail-Fast vs Fail-Safe

📌 Save this for your next Java interview.

The Scope("prototype") trap every Dev falls into 👇

You mark your bean Scope("prototype"), inject it into a Component (Singleton), and expect a fresh instance on every call...
Except it acts like a SINGLETON! Why?
- The Catch:
Dependency injection happens only once during the Singleton’s creation. The Spring container resolves and injects the prototype instance at startup, and that exact reference stays pinned inside your Singleton forever.
3 Ways to Fix It:
- Scoped Proxy (Best Approach)
Add proxyMode = ScopedProxyMode.TARGET_CLASS to Scope. Spring injects a dynamic proxy that fetches a fresh instance on every method call.
- Lookup Annotation
Annotate an abstract/dummy getter with Lookup in your Singleton. Spring overrides it dynamically at runtime.
- ObjectFactory<T> / Provider<T>
Inject ObjectFactory<MyPrototypeBean> and call .getObject() whenever you need a brand-new instance.
Save this for your next Spring Boot interview prep!

Stream<Integer> operates on generic object wrappers (java.lang.Integer). Every intermediate operation (.map(), .filter()) forces the JVM to continuously auto-box primitive int values into heap-allocated Integer objects and unbox them again. IntStream uses raw primitive int values directly on the execution stack, eliminating millions of short-lived object allocations on the heap.

Virtual Threads are scheduled on top of a small pool of OS "Carrier Threads". However, if a Virtual Thread executes a synchronized block or method while performing a blocking I/O operation, it gets pinned to its Carrier Thread. The carrier thread cannot be unmounted to process other virtual threads, completely starving your system.
The Senior Fix: Replace legacy synchronized blocks with java.util.concurrent.locks.ReentrantLock, which allows Virtual Threads to unmount freely during blocking I/O calls.

Client-side load balancing (like Eureka or Spring Cloud LoadBalancer) caches healthy instance IP addresses locally to minimize registry lookups. If your deregistration heartbeat interval or local TTL cache is configured too high, the gateway won't know instances were killed until the cache expires, sending active requests to dead IPs. Always align service discovery heartbeat intervals with your deployment eviction speeds.

Re-evaluating JWT cryptographic signatures and fetching user permissions inside every microservice creates massive, redundant CPU and DB overhead. The API Gateway Pattern dictates that authentication and token validation should happen once at the edge gateway. The gateway then passes a clean, lightweight, pre-validated header context (e.g., X-User-Id) downstream to internal services over a secure private network.

You cannot use traditional ACID database transactions across isolated microservice databases. Instead, implement the SAGA Pattern (Orchestration or Choreography). When Service C fails, it emits an InventoryFailed event, which triggers Compensating Transactions—explicit rollback methods in Service B (refunding payment) and Service A (canceling the order) to restore eventual consistency.

Charged twice for the same order? 💳

Here’s what happened: Kafka guarantees "At-Least-Once" delivery by default. When a network hiccup occurs, Kafka re-delivers the exact same event.
Without Idempotency Key deduplication, your backend executes the payment logic twice!

The Fix:
Pass a unique eventId or idempotencyKey with every message.
Insert the key into a deduplication table with a UNIQUE constraint before running payment logic.
If a duplicate arrives, the DB constraint violation blocks it safely!

Answer in the comments: How do you handle idempotency in your stack? 👇

Don't play guessing games with log files when your app crashes due to an OutOfMemoryError.

The Plan: Enable the JVM flag -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError in production. This forces the JVM to write the entire contents of its memory to a .hprof file the exact millisecond it panics. Load that file into tools like Eclipse MAT or JProfiler to pinpoint the exact object class that is hogging your heap space.

This is a textbook concurrency race condition where threads are overwriting each other’s data state (Lost Update Problem).

The Plan: Implement proper locking mechanisms:
Optimistic Locking: Use a Version field in JPA. If another thread updates the row in the meantime, an OptimisticLockException is thrown, allowing you to retry the request cleanly.
Pessimistic Locking: Use database-level row locks (SELECT FOR UPDATE) via Lock(LockModeType.PESSIMISTIC_WRITE) to force concurrent threads to queue up lineally.

Save this for your next technical interview! 📌
