Thank you @rivertownsdispatch for highlighting one of my favorite volunteers in their Volunteer of the Month column! If you've ever been to a @rivertowns_repair_cafe you've probably seen Lindsey Jeanne Taylor at the check-in table. What she co-founded with @ariella_gastel in 2019 as the Hastings Repair Cafe has now grown into the Rivertowns Cafe Consortium which includes cafes in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, Irvington, Dobbs Ferry and now Ardsley. She also is the unsung hero of @repaircafehudsonvalley as an absolute kick-ass graphic designer and social media guru and she has helped me out in many, many unsung ways. She's more of a behind-the-scenes kind of gal but she SO deserves this recognition--and much more. by @riveredgeviews

Went to #RockwoodHall this afternoon to hear the words of Poe among gothic ruins. Glorious views and fresh, crisp air. I only found out today that Olmsted designed the grounds, with breathtaking trees and carriage trails. David Neilsen gave an impassioned reading of Edgar Allan Poe’s stories and poems, so what follows is no shade on his great work.

During the reading, I realized I’m done romanticizing and listing to tortured “genius” men, their melancholy, their madness. I have been for a while, but today it crystallized. I feel compelled to read Virginia Woolf again. taken in Rockefeller State Park (Rockwood) by @riveredgeviews

One of my favorite destinations in Hillside Woods was “Indian Rock.” It sits at the intersection of two trails between Valley Place and Hamilton Avenue, what would be on your way to the water tower and the elementary school.

Hillside Woods had dense lush foliage, that you could not see through to other trails. I feel like even in winter, but that could be the nostalgia talking. It would be a delight and surprise to see a deer — much less coyote. Countless hours were spent in the streams, at Sugar Pond and all the unmarked trails all year long.

Indian Rock had a slope to sit on that took me years to master. I am sure getting bigger helped. The rock still stands but the woods are diminished around it.

Do families still call it Indian Rock? Do children still try to master that slope? Is playing in Hillside Woods as fun as when you couldn’t see through to the next trails?

El Barrio Repair Cafe turned 4, and they threw a celebration worthy of it 🎉

Repair Cafe Hudson Valley (with Rivertowns Repair Cafe ) came down to Manhattan to join in!

Activists, community builders, artists, musicians, storytellers and repairers from El Barrio to the Hudson Valley, all in one room. Plus one chihuahua keeping an eye on things 🐕

“Community building” may sound trite and overused. But it’s real and it’s effective. Repair culture isn’t just about fixing objects. It’s about mending and strengthening the fabric of our communities.
