random design sketched while watching a joe lycett comedy special (as one does) and later refined in procreate

the dress features multicoloured wool tassels layered over each other sort of like a piñata, with yarn bows on top. the high-low skirt displays matching heeled boots and just as colourful patterned tights 🌈

GCSE textiles exam piece - War & Peace 📰

My chosen theme for this was “history”. I every quickly chose to focus on WWII following much research on the 1930s-60s. I researched Paddy Hartley, an artist known for his WWI/WWII battle dress and gas masks, with machine-embroidered images and lettering. I particularly found his art inspired by early plastic surgery fascinating. My second artist was Lisa Kokin, who repurposes old photographs of people by stitching them together to create a family tree, showing human connection.

I experimented with rusting fabric, screen printing, applique, patchwork and machine lettering in the creation of this newspaper wall hanging. As I had originally wanted to incorporate pop culture in my final piece, I chose to make each column the lyrics to a song relevant to the time. The “War!” side shows Vera Lynn’s wartime classic, “We’ll Meet Again”, and the “Peace!” side is “It’s Been a Long, Long Time” by Harry James. The headline, column and date was all screen printed during my 10-hour exam, cut out and sewn on top of the patchwork of multiple dyed, rusted, distressed and otherwise beige fabrics, chosen specifically to evoke a worn-down feeling, the same you get when looking at an old book with yellowing pages. The newspaper name was created using a computerised sewing machine. The appliqués on either side show the a plane and a medal, symbolising the start and end of the war. I chose to use a zigzag stitch to show that the pages have been taken from two different newspapers. Lastly, I left all edges raw (besides the tabs at the top) to display the distress of the war as well as the age of each article.

2025 in fashion designs! 👩‍🎨🪡

2025 marks the year i really became focused on my designing skills. i have tried my best to put all of these illustrations in chronological order so you can get a feel for my still-evolving style. you may also notice that some of these are rough sketches of previously-posted designs, or haven’t been posted at all. there is a simple explanation for this: i simply felt i couldn’t post rough sketches, and i originally only wanted this account to be for completed works. however, as i have attended many university open days late this year, i have realised that the process matters just as much as the final piece.

this year, so many ideas have come to me and i have had no clue where to begin with them - such as my (still in progress) “CLASH!” designs 💔 - my account has had its fair few dry spells of no posts. but as i will be finishing a-levels and starting uni in 2026, i hope to be able to update this much more often AND actually stick to my design ideas… my collection “femcel culture” has been long abandoned due to inability to design anything brand new for it. oops 😞

alongside this, i hope to create more practical work like embroidery samples and other hits and bobs like that.. otherwise i feel my work can seem a little flat and repetitive

aaaaanyway, happy new year!! i’m personally manifesting the fall of ai art but i’ll be fr i know it probs won’t happen yet 🥀

designs inspired by music: “songs” - adrianne lenker 🌼

each song in this album was very carefully researched (mostly using genius) and designs were created using certain elements of each song. it was really interesting to get to know these songs so much better, and almost get a look into adrianne lenker’s life through analysing her lyrics. i also enjoyed straying away from a set style, as i had originally thought i would keep to the typical warm golden-hour nature tones of the album cover but found it difficult to do so as each song had its own colour palette dictated in my initial notes. overall, however, these designs are some of my best and i love them even more knowing that they allowed me to get to know an album i already loved a lot better 💛🌿

introducing amorica! (am-or-ee-kah, say it right for the love of god)

amorica is a silly brand i began devising a few months ago when i was bored. named after myself, she’s a fashion & interiors brand aiming to bring back classic vintage styles, but with a more modern (and sustainable!) twist.

in this post, i have also shown a brand new moodboard for a collection, made for online work experience. as it turns out, i’m actually really proud of it! i hate the dull, drab aesthetics i keep seeing in today’s fashion, where nearly everything feels the exact same. let’s get some variety!!

i’ve included a few quick sketches i’ve done at school which i am going to tidy up at a later date.

though it will likely not come to fruition, i thought i’d share my initial thoughts and plans because i haven’t posted on here in quite a while!!! 💕🪩 by @rixismithdesigns

Romney Tweed Design Competition 2024 ⭐️

For this mini project, I had to research Romney Tweed, a local company based in Old Romney. I then had to get research from a local area (Margate) and zoom into smaller aspects, eventually researching a British fashion designer, making a small strip of my own tweed inspired by my research and designing a piece of clothing using my tweed.
I was very heavily inspired by Margate’s large vintage scene. I hopped around the vintage shops, charity shops, the Old Kent Market and even the Turner Contemporary, taking photos of the different things that caught my eye such as colourful buildings and hawaiian shirts. Later on, I picked out my favourite photos and created small responses to them, such as buttons with a small dot of paint in the middle to mimic vinyl records or a quick drawing of a studio on some tracing paper.
The British designer I chose to research was Mary Quant. I chose her because I thought her work fit in really well with my ongoing vintage theme. To this day, I am still fascinated by 60s fashion, especially that designed by people like Quant or Barbara Hulanicki (co-founder of BIBA).
I attended a few workshops following this research. The first one was a yarn-wrap workshop, where I was able to gauge the kinds of colours I would want to use in my final tweed. These went towards my development moodboard, where I merged all of my research into one and created a quick weave and a watercolour painting of some small shops in Margate.
Finally, I created my weave using pink, yellow, turquoise and orange authentic Romney wool and used a photo of this to make a repeat pattern- or wallpaper- on Procreate. I found a digital fashion design template online and designed a cropped blazer with dramatic, oversized lapels and bell sleeves. This was styled with an orange satin skirt, black roll neck and large gold hoop earrings.
I am incredibly proud of this project considering the small time frame I had to complete it. I’m even more proud to say that I won the “Most Creative Design” award for my work! 🐑 taken in Margate, Kent by @rixismithdesigns

more edits from GCSE photography!

i really like these edits, though i wasn't quite as fond of them when i first made them. i think they've definitely grown on me since i first made them over a year ago and have now become some of my favourites from the whole course <33 by @rixismithdesigns

this is the watering can i made for my GCSE textiles coursework!! the body of it was made with chicken wire, cardboard and zip ties, then covered in patchwork made up of different textile techniques (e.g. screen printing, hand embroidery, applique/reverse applique) and sewn on using a blanket stitch. i kept the watering can spout up using a single piece of green embroidery thread - i would have used clear thread, but i didn’t have any at the time. i’ve included photos of some of the best sections of the piece! 🌸

i only made a few flowers during to lack of time and resources, so i ended up making daisies, lavender and daffodils because they’re all spring flowers and that was my entire theme!! 🌷
