The relationship between Denji and Reze stands as one of the most defining and emotionally devastating narrative arcs in Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga Chainsaw Man. Spanning the dynamic Bomb Girl arc, their connection serves as a critical turning point for Denji’s emotional growth. What begins as a seemingly serendipitous, lighthearted anime romance rapidly deconstructs into a complex web of espionage, shared trauma, existential yearning, and tragic timing. Through Reze, Denji experiences genuine mutual empathy for the very first time, yet the brutal realities of their world guarantee that their love is as explosive as it is fleeting.
The Rainy Encounter and the Flirtatious Façade
Denji’s journey throughout Chainsaw Man is heavily dictated by his desperate quest for affection and validation. Groomed and manipulated by Makima, he is starved for authentic warmth. Enter Reze, who literally brings shelter to Denji during a sudden downpour inside a cramped telephone booth. Working as a cheerful, innocent waitress at a local coffee shop, Reze immediately disarms Denji with her bright personality and forward flirtation.
Unlike the high-pressure, transactional relationship Denji has with Public Safety, his initial time spent with Reze feels distinctly normal. They share intimate, mundane experiences:
The Cafe Visits: Denji finds his body subconsciously pulling him back to her cafe just to sit and speak with her.
Learning to Read: Upon discovering that Denji never attended school, Reze offers to teach him kanji. In a moment of playful intimacy, she writes a provocative word to test him, breaking into a genuine laugh when he admits it's the only word he recognizes. This causes Denji to realize, absentmindedly, that the conceptual hell of school would be paradise if she were there with him.
The Nighttime Swim: Breaking into a school pool at night, Reze teaches Denji how to swim. In the quiet, luminous water, the barriers between them melt. Reze nudges Denji to run away with her, offering an escape from a life where he is constantly used as a weapon.
For Denji, Reze represents a clean slate—an alternative reality where he is valued as a human boy rather than celebrated taken in KineMaster by @rizxcore

A tiebreaker race is scheduled for one week later in California.
