That's a wrap SoCal. Thanks for a couple fun San Diego salty experiences this summer. From yellowtail with captains @special_45 and @holacappycharters , corbina off the beach with @mike__kaplan , makos on the fly with @jared.duval , spending time fishing with my dad, and throwing some cornhole bags with @casthope @casthopesd , I love every chance I get to come back to my home waters. An ocean that I was raised on as a kid and somehow still feels familiar 35+ years later. I truly love this place, the captains I get to fish with, and the memories made with family and friends. For anyone wanting to check out San Diego fly fishing, I will be doing this again in 2027. Hit me up if you're interested.

I want to share a picture with you that really touched me from our San Diego region this past weekend. This young lady had just caught her first fish—a spotted bay bass from Mission Bay. But when the camera came out, she covered her face with her hand.
Nearly 50% of the kids Cast Hope serves can't have their faces shown publicly for privacy and safety reasons. It's one of the realities of working with the underserved populations at the heart of our mission. We get to see their excitement, their laughter, and their smiles, but often we're unable to share those moments with everyone who makes this work possible. What you don't see in this picture is the big smile behind her hand.

There's something about this image that captures both great joy and a little sadness for me. Here is a young person experiencing the excitement of catching her first fish, yet circumstances require us to hide part of that moment from the world. But maybe that's also what makes the picture so meaningful.

Cast Hope is here for kids like her. For a few hours, we get the privilege of sharing something we love and giving a young person an opportunity to experience the outdoors in a positive way. Maybe it's catching a first fish. Maybe it's learning something difficult and succeeding. Maybe it's simply spending a few hours with a caring adult who is genuinely excited to be there with them. And maybe that moment becomes something they carry with them—a positive memory, a healthy outlet, a relationship, or a connection to the outdoors that isn't defined by whatever challenges they may be facing elsewhere in life.

I think it's easy to describe Cast Hope as a fishing organization. But after doing this work for so many years, I think the reality is much simpler:
We're a people organization that uses fishing to create positive moments and meaningful relationships in kids' lives.

Behind that hand is a smile.

And all of you helped put it there.

It was so cool to watch this Mako shark try to eat @jared.duval popper fly. A great visual moment that I'll never forget. Insane to see this animal up close in its SoCal environment. Mako madness in San Diego, CA. Casting at a Mako estimated at 700+ pounds is absolutely insane. Such a cool bucket list experience with @special_45 . Greg is an awesome captain and I highly recommend. Thanks to all the donors of @casthope and @casthopesd for supporting us and helping kids from Southern California get out on the water fishing. If you want to join us next year then let us know. Every hardcore saltwater angler out there needs to experience this trip. Feeding an animal of this magnitude 50 feet from a boat is truly a moment you'll never forget.
