The horrific events coming to light from Cornell makes me feel like I have to say something and maybe one person will think differently. When you are sexually assaulted especially in a brutal fashion such as a gang rape something inside you dies. The men did not simply have sex with an individual drunk and drugged. They murdered a part of a human being who will never get the chance to live fully without fear, pain and panic. I wonder often about how differently my life would have been shaped, my response to everyday life. It’s shocking what can trigger you. But on a daily basis for the rest of her life there will be sadness. There will be darkness that no amount of therapy or religion can fix. You learn to cope and make the most happiness you can out of life despite it.

They should be sentenced to LIFE in prison. This is a type of death, a death of innocence, trust and in many cases self-worth. Not ONE MAN in this house stopped to think- I need to do something. Call the cops, try to get her out of there, or tell someone?! The part that most people miss is she, myself and many other girls who have gone through this experience are given a life sentence. But these men will probably get a little jail and probation. (Or in this case no criminal charge whatsoever)

We do not ask for a life sentence of pain, struggles, anxiety, panic attacks, and self-doubt. A LIFE SENTENCE was forced on us.

The impact of this situation and for all girls like her is beyond comprehension, explanation and nor is it fixable. But these men continued to attend Cornell, get jobs, even one worked right here in Charlotte, NC.

We don’t look at murderers and go “oh they made one mistake, I don’t want to ruin the rest of their life.”

But yet, as victims because of their act, their choice, ours is already shattered.

Please be kind in your comments, thoughts and reactions for this poor young woman. I stand with you as many women and girls do. Speak out, actually SCREAM out.

Do what I did, turn that death into a rebirth, one full of rage ready to fight back. One ready to forgive yourself. One that helps other women. One that learns to live again but holds that rage, just in case. by @rkfennel

Two years ago, this scene looked much different. Houses sat here full of life. There were gardens, boats, docks, neighbors, and so many memories. Then, on September 27, it was all taken by a flood no one could have expected or predicted. And just like that unpredictable flood, eventually the water subsided. The pain of what we lost has softened with time, but the trauma still finds its way back on days like today. For me, it’s the what could have been that comes to mind. I miss the people who left. I miss the neighbors. I miss the vibrancy of life fluttering around this little stretch of the river. But we are still here. And while the could have been still exists, there is beauty here, too. The river has shifted. The landscape has changed. Life looks different than it did before, but the water still flows and the view is still beautiful. Maybe that’s the thing about life. It rarely turns out exactly how you expect. Sometimes the course changes completely. And you never know, in the end, something beautiful might still come from it.
