🎙️ JUDGE SPOTLIGHT 🎙️
Meet @midorikawaemily, judge of this year’s Book Edit Writers’ Prize! ✨
Emily’s debut novel, A Tiny Speck of Black and Then Nothing, took over two decades from first draft to publication with Manilla Press. Her advice to writers sitting on an unfinished manuscript? “The work will not die in your absence from it. It may lie dormant, but it can be revived.”
She’s also co-author, with @littlegoatbarnretreats director Emma Claire Sweeney, of A Secret Sisterhood and author of Out of the Shadows, and a former prize winner herself.
On what she’s hoping to find in this year’s entries: “A sense of atmosphere, a strong voice and characters that I can believe in.”

Published in 2008. 2 Goodreads reviews. 9 ratings. 🤯

This is a SERIOUSLY under-read book!

Home by Rebekah Lattin-Rawstrone is creepy, bleak and deeply unsettling, but what really got me is that underneath the horror is a sharp look at ageing, institutionalisation and what happens when people become invisible in society.

It’s the kind of book that makes you uncomfortable, makes you think, and then sticks around long after you’ve finished it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me - and now I’m wondering how on earth so few people have read it! Because 3 years on from reading it myself, and coming up on 18 years since it was published and only 2 other people (besides myself) have reviewed it on GoodReads….what?!

I love finding books that feel like they’ve somehow slipped through the cracks - but then they make me want to tell everyone about them!

I attended the online launch of The Hyena’s Daughter by @jupiterjones and published by @weatherglassbooks I was lucky enough, after a few spins, to win a signed copy. It arrived today! Yay! Joint winner of the Weatherglass Novella Prize 2026 it’s a wonderful book about the daughters of Mary Wollstonecraft with a particular focus on the lesser-known Fanny Imlay. Its a fresh look on the histories of these famous sisters that entices and moves with tempting, vital fragments. There are stays (many meanings), electric sparks, heartbreaks and, of course, there is passion and death. And now I have a spare copy… If anyone wants my unsigned copy, message me. by @rlattinrawstrone
